Some say that Ragnar, the clan’s vicious leader, has been taken by madness. There is no hard proof, but the evidence is visible before the clan. He obsesses over his collection of bones. He grooms himself to the point of injury. He throws himself into battle like a wild beast, reveling in his wounds and fearless before both pain and death. If not mad, then what is he? And if he is mad, then how does the clan fare under his leadership?

Behind Ragnar’s wild violence is Astrid, his calm yet ruthless mate. Astrid runs the clan in his shadow, keeping things smooth and efficient despite her mate’s eccentricities. He is her Charge, and she is loyal to him until the very end – that means cleaning up his messes, defending him against unfounded criticisms, and keeping the everyday logistics in order.

Astrid is the more reasonable of the two. She is clever and logical, though largely lacking in empathy. She is cold and approaches issues with hollow practicality. Emotion never plays into her decisions, only logic and reason, which has led to many thinking her heartless.

In her mind, the betterment of the clan matters more than any one dragon’s feelings or even well-being, though many don’t bother to look past that. While she will always value the betterment of the many over that of the few, she will still fight for every individual if it’s possible. Unlike her mate, who rampages openly in defense of each dragon and takes grave offense to each threat, Astrid understands that this is not always possible.

Her calculating and pragmatic nature makes her an excellent problem solver. In addition to tactical and logistical work, she also settles most of the debates in the clan. Some, following Ragnar’s lead, would rather fight to solve their problems. Astrid is not interested in seeing the clan weakened by infighting, and is quick to hand out punishment for brawls. Instead, she prefers to preside over such conflicts and come to a fair and meaningful conclusion, even if the other dragons’ anger is left unresolved.

While many rumors follow Ragnar, he is still beloved. As much work as Astrid puts into the clan, she is sometimes hated. Outsiders often look at the clan and see the genius of their union. One is emotional, violent, impulsive, and charismatic. The other is competent, skilled, quiet, and ruthless.

Ragnar is the clan’s face, encouraging the others with his decisiveness and evident loyalty to the individual. Astrid is withdrawn and calm, quietly keeping things on track, even if she isn’t loved for doing what she does. The clan needs both of them to function, but Astrid doesn’t mind missing out on the credit. All of that attention would probably just be a bother. She’d much rather proceed as she is, watching with amusement while she handles things behind the scenes.
