A Guardian defends his charge.

Some liken them to the knights of legend, who were sworn to uphold a code in defense of those who cannot defend themselves. A knight protects the defenseless, wielding a sword guided by virtue. A knight honors his code and follows his word. He is also polished, poised, and courtly.

It may be a fitting analogy for some Guardians, perhaps even most, but not for Ragnar. He is none of those things. Far from courtly, Ragnar is unapologetically violent and impulsive. He is a destructive force, never flinching from an act of aggression if it serves his purpose. His temper, when provoked, is terrible, matched only by his vengeance when someone offends him or harms something that he holds dear.

Not only is he quick to fight, but he savors every moment of it. He relishes the scent of blood. He craves the exhilaration of battle. He even seems to revel in scars left behind. The pain itself gives him as much of a rush as anything else, and he welcomes it as he throws himself before his enemies.

There is a morbidity in him that extends even beyond battle. While at peace, the dragon endlessly and almost obsessively grooms himself in an unsettling ritual that worries his clan mates. He also has a deep fascination with bleached bones, which he adorns himself with and collects with earnest dedication.

Why, then, would anyone draw such a comparison? Nobody is calling Ragnar a knight, but all who know him see that he holds one sacred thing close to his heart: his charge. And unlike most Guardians, Ragnar does not have only one charge. He has many (or so he frequently insists). Each and every dragon who lives in his territory is precious to him.

For all his violence and masochism, Ragnar is a staunch defender of the needy. He protects his clan with the ferocity of not a single warrior, but hundreds. He will throw himself into absolutely any challenge, even those that are beyond his skill, only to protect those that he cares for. Ragnar may not be a gentleman, but he is still a Guardian, and he will defend what he loves to his dying breath.

That loyalty is enough to earn the admiration of his clan mates, who are willing to look past his violent tendencies and his strange habits. They feel safe, even though others may look at their leader and wince in fear.

Curiously enough, those close to him have come to term his behavior not as dangerous, but merely eccentric. In addition to his grooming fixation, the otherwise fearsome guardian is known to tend large flocks of baby goats. Nobody is allowed to eat them, much to the confusion of his clan and the exasperation of his bondmate. They chalk it up as another example of his peculiar habits.
