Matriarch • Moonshadow x Fossil • Cryptic • Cheerful

You stalk the swamplands of the Shadowbinder's domain, lost in the dark. Approaching a stretch of high-rooted trees, you notice a structure made of faintly-glowing moss and black mud within the roots. Cold and lonely, you slip into the vine curtain of the entrance. Firestarters line the walls, creating a smoky light.

"Hello there! Oh my, we weren't expecting any visitors today!" A black head with four violet eyes rounds the bend, startling you. The dragoness hands you a firestarter ("It's perfectly safe,") and leads you into her lair.

"We are the Clan of Nightfall, a group of dragons dedicated to the cause of EXP and cookies," She hurrs. "The big gray-brown dragon is Fossil, my mate. I found him as I set up shop here, and we've been together since! Oh, and you probably can't wait to see Hemo's lab!" You shrink back, exhausted of such enthusiasm. "Oh, don't worry; We're clearly not a band of lurking murderers just waiting to kill you! This way!" You reluctantly follow her down the earthen halls, afraid of what comes next...

Moonshadow was abandoned by her parents when she was a tiny hatchling- they were exalts, and had been forbidden from having children, as they would be too busy to raise them. However, she managed to survive on a mix of grit and instinct- alongside something else. She was born with the power to hear the voice of the shadows of the Wood, perhaps even the Shadowbinder herself, whispering as if they had perched on her very frills. She never quite understood all of what was said, but she followed any orders given, and prayed fervently for guidance when possible.

While her gift was helpful at times, it could also be a himdrance. At times, she could barely tell apart the inky whispers from her own thoughts, and the combination of cryptic murmurs and constant loneliness left her well-spoken, but maladjusted. When she happened across a clan, few could understand her- but those that knew better, those that called her "oracle," left her running. They craved prophecies, advice, commands- all things she could give serving as a conduit to the Shadowbinder. They'd promise her glory, but she could tell they were trying yo trap her, to use her- she could taste it in the air, the dark mildew of trickery that pulsed in her own Shadow-touched mind.

Despite dragonkind's untrustworthiness, she was determined to find a home among some Clan in the vast Wood. She stayed with several clans over time, only to eventually leave them- she even tried to establish relationships, for she was terribly lonely, but she easily lost interest and moved on.

She never fully settled down until she met Fossil. Towering over her, he took Moonshadow as his Charge, giving her consistent protection from the aggressive forces of the dim swamps they wandered. He barely seemed to notice her gift- and let her embrace her odd personality in front of him, not seeming to care if she rambled away, stared into space, or spoke of concepts foreign to even herself. He was quiet, and consistent, and all his rampant devotion seemed only natural to a dragon who could hear- no, feel- the living, breathing essence of her flight.

Finally, the pair settled down, building a murky lair and having their first clutch of eggs. Soon after, with only one child of theirs remaining- the rest having ran away or been exalted- they began to expand their circle of residents until they founded a clan- on the suggestion of a shrouded outcry, they called it the Clan of Nightfall.

Despite her strange demeanor and generally harmless exterior, Moonshadow is the definitive leader of the clan. Even if Fossil tends to have more practical power in day-to-day terms, when she intervenes, her word is law- a trait that has often curtailed Fossil's more dictatorial impulses. If prompted, she will not hesitate to fight anyone who dares threaten her clan or Flight- although oftentimes her mate or clanmates do it for her. She possesses a fiery, upbeat spirit, but can shift tone in an instant- and often does so when she hears yet another message from beyond herself. Do to these messages, she is often oblivious to what happens around her, choosing instead to listen in and then ponder on the murky phrases.

Most of her children end up being exalted, and are raised to view the role favorably- it is an honor, after all! However, two have stayed with the clan: Bloodbath, the hunter, and Rainbowkitten, the warrior. She loves them both dearly- even if, at times, she has trouble communicating it, or even forgets to do so. When it comes to her children, or even her clanmates, when her voice is stern (or missing entirely!), her heart is soft. Save for the direst times, her executive powers are never put to much use; how could she lift a claw against her own?
