Biography

Name: Tarku
Title and/or Role: Clan Elder and Scavenger
Relationship status: Mated to Vlkanor
Background: Tarku always had a fascination with random junk. Even as a hatchling, he ignored other dragons in favour of shiny pebbles, interesting twigs and discarded feathers – a trait which led to him wandering off for longer and longer periods of time until he eventually wandered away from his clan altogether. Aluriel and the others found him, barely more than a hatchling, wandering down the beach collecting shells, and took him in. In the early days, his eclectic collection habits helped finance the clan – he is considerably more interested in finding things than keeping them.

One day in a long-abandoned ruin, he was reaching for a piece of stone that had been carved to resemble intimate Snapper anatomy, when a female Imperial yelled ‘Boo!’, grabbed it, and flew off. It was love at first sight. Of course, he still had to catch her, learn her name, and grab the rock... but as it turned out, she was not a swift flyer when she wanted to be caught, she was single, interested, and named Vlkanor.

He never did manage to get the Snapper genitalia from her, though.

His most notorious find was the Morphos Gem. It was large and sparkling – two things Tarku never could resist – and sitting all by itself in a cave in a trench guarded by Maren with poison spears... just waiting for anyone to help themselves to it, really. Which Tarku accordingly did, only to find that it changed him when he touched it. He’d been plain, with rippled wings: now he sparkled as brightly as the Gem itself. He showed it to Vlkanor, and the same thing happened to her - and to Aluriel, who also turned into a Tundra to boot. Falkor, the clan mage, managed to get it contained, and work out a more controlled method of using it for those clan members who wished to be a little different to the way they were born – including later changing Aluriel into a Coatl.

Tarku is by far the least serious of the Elders, preferring to leave clan business to the others while he goes off treasure hunting. He and Vlkanor generally work as a pair, and they match as well as their first meeting would suggest, sharing a love of adventure and sparkling things, and only occasionally quarrelling over who gets the credit for their finds.
