stardust - part 1 ( falling, falling, falling )
{ part 1 }part 2part 3

The ballroom was magnificent. Dark tapestries lined the walls, velveteen curtains woven from the space between galaxies. Shining mosaics of constellations adorn the ceiling, the luminescent stars reflected in the dancing figures below. They danced to music so exquisite no earthly instruments could replicate it, their delicate forms twirling and swaying hypnotically.

Orion danced amongst his siblings, formations shifting and undulating but remaining ever the same. Twisting and swirling, warm bodies pressed against his own. Raucous laughter rang around the room, the joyous shouts of the dancing stars echoing through the halls.

Suddenly Orion felt a pull. He stopped dancing. Like a wave, his siblings stopped dancing alongside him, looking to each other in confusion. Their expressions shifted to a look of knowing sadness, as they realised what had happened.

A wish. Somebody had wished and now one of them had been picked to go. Orion lay in the middle of the ballroom, his siblings all sitting around him, whispering comforting words and encouragements.

“Don’t worry, everything will be alright. We will watch over you.”

Their whispers faded as Orion’s vision went dark.

His siblings watched on as Orion’s body crumbled into dust, the shimmering powder swirling away to fall to the mortal lands below. The stars paused a moment, composing themselves after the loss of their brother. He would be back soon. He would be back.

The music started up again. They stood, and continued dancing once more. It was their duty.

He awoke with a start, chest heaving. There was a noise in the corner and suddenly there was a dragon in his face. Orion screeched, reeling backwards, wings flailing and legs kicking.

“You’re awak- OW!”

The strange dragon stumbled back, clutching their face. Orion watched them as they regained their footing. The dragon straightened their cloak and turned to him to speak again.

“You kicked me! I understand that this must be stressful for you but was that really necessary?!”

Orion simply stared at them. They sigh. They look tired. Had they stayed there waiting for him to wake up?

“...I suppose I should introduce myself. My name is Lacaille. What do you remember? You hit your head when you…”

She trailed off, looking over him for a moment before continuing.

“... when you fell from the sky. You hit your head pretty hard, do you remember anything?”

Orion thinks. He glanced at the dragon and her cloak. The sparkling white dots on it seemed to shift. There’s something familiar about them.

“Are you okay? You’re crying…”

He blinked at Lacaille. He hadn’t realised he was crying. Why was he crying? All of a sudden, it hits him. Orion froze and fell into a heap, sobbing into the blankets Lacaille had wrapped around him.

For weeks he stayed away from everyone, cursing whoever wished upon his celestial body, for until the wish has been granted, he cannot return home.

Eventually Orion realised he could not weep any longer, for there was no use. He was stuck. With Lacaille’s help, he became friendlier toward the rest of the clan, and got him to try out various jobs around the clan. He settled on working in the library, where he sorted and tidied the towering shelves of books.

After many months, Orion made the descision to confide in Lacaille about why he had fallen. When a dragon down on Sornieth makes a wish filled with hope and conviction, a wish so pure and true from the depths of a their heart and soul- a wish so strong that the very universe listens. A star falls from the sky and is tasked with finding the one who made that wish so they may aid them in fulfilling their wish.

“Many of my siblings have been called down by wishes, and only a handful have returned. I aim to be one of those who make it back.” Orion stands by the open window, staring out into the darkness toward the skies above the Starwood Strand.

“...” Lacaille sits behind him, face turned down toward the floor and tail twitching erratically.

“I want to go searching for my Wisher, but...” Orion turns his gaze away from his siblings far above, and looks toward Lacaille. Her expression is unreadable. He turns back to the window, and out toward the vast horizon.

“... I have no idea where to start.” Even if he assumed that the dragon who had wished him from the sky had been in the Starfall Isles at the time, who knows where they might be within the territory- if they were still there at all. Seeing Orion's expression waver, Lalonde speaks up.

“Did your siblings tell you any stories about how they found theirs? Maybe you could draw some inspiration?”

Orion paused for a moment, attempting to recall what his siblings had told him. They had described the world below as a wondrous place, filled with new, strange and beautiful sights.

They were certainly right about that. He glanced over to Lacaille, feathers ruffled and cloak slightly askew from lying next to him as they read together. Orion blushed sightly and quickly turned his attention elsewhere. Right. His siblings stories. He wracked his brain for anything else that may prove more useful, pacing around their room before flopping into Lacaille’s lap.

“They... often were found by their Wisher. The ones who were lucky enough to find them early on often just happened across them. I'm not sure how they knew that the dragon was their wisher though.”

Lacaille nodded slowly, a faraway look in her eyes. She seemed... apprehensive. The pair stays silent for a moment before Orion speaks once more, lying across Lacaille's lap, as she plays idly with his crown of feathers. He mumbles into her chest, his voice soft and slurred as sleep begins to overtake him.

"I wonder what it was."

"Hm?"

"The wish so great it fell a star."

Lacaille pauses her ministrations, and looks down toward the dragon draped across her lap. He is already asleep. She pauses, a strange expression crossing her face- a mix of love and guilt- before she continues stroking his feathers gently. He deserves more than her, she thinks. So much more.

Orion dreams that night. An uncommon occurrence; his mostly sleepless nights are filled with varying nightmares when he does close his eyes- sickness, quarantine, pain. however, this time, he finds himself dreaming of dancing amongst his siblings once more. He looks around, and Lacaille is by his side. He shoots her a grin as they twirl across the ballroom, his siblings parting just for them.

It's lovely. She's lovely.

He dreams of letting go of her hand, taking up someone elses. This new dragon is beautiful. Orion stares at her and can't help but smile. They dance together for a while, before Lacaille rejoins them with a bow. Orion finds himself dancing with practiced steps, the trio of dancers keeping time by the simultaneous beating of their hearts.

When he awakens the next morning, he thinks back on his dream and realises he has no idea who the other beautiful dragon was. He lets himself get excited, perhaps they might be his Wisher! Maybe he has a way home... A soft noise draws his attention to the dragon at his side. Lacaille nuzzles into his side.

What would happen to her if I left?

At that thought, he stops. Orion glances toward his mate, laying in all her splendour. He sighs, and strokes her face. She looks so peaceful, feathers slightly mussed from sleep. He really doesn't know what he would do without her. But as he looks away out the open window once more, he can't help but wonder if he might find out one day. He needs to go home.
