Valkan is in charge of protecting the lair itself. All lair guards and hoard guards report to him. He ensures that nothing breaches the stronghold of the lair. While Valkan is very capable at his job and there have not yet been any major incidents under his watch, he puts the security of the lair above everything else - including his own wellbeing. He constantly needs to be coaxed from patrolling the lair, checking watch rosters, or overlooking planned lair expansions for possible breach points in order to get him to eat or sleep. Usually this task falls to his mate, Caradoc, but Hesperie and Redwave, his closest friends, will also take up the task.

All members of the clan respect Valkan, as it is clear to everyone how much he puts into their safety. He has a minor rivalry with Troth, though it is almost entirely one-sided, since Valkan finds the whole idea silly and a waste of his precious time.
