Biography
Hidden in the crumbling remains of the Ghostlight Ruins dwells Rancor, a living part of the darkness that spreads throughout the venue, permeating every crumbling crevice. Able to walk through the shadows, the warlock can sneak and spy with ease, preying on the hunters, gatherers and warriors who come seeking spoils for their clan from the strange beasts of the Ruins.
None come stranger than Rancor, whose striped hide and dark-touched eyes hint at the bubbling shadow sorcery within. Enhanced by a dangerous pact with The Shade, the spiral's power was increased tenfold, but he became hopelessly addicted to the strong magic and over time it began eating away at him from the inside, eroding his very essence. As more and more of his life force was drained by the evil of The Shade, the frantic dragon used more of his magic to compensate, which only fed the darkness further...
Desperate for time, the warlock plotted and schemed in his thorny hovel among the debris of the Ruins, consulting ancient tomes and scrolls, hoping to find a way of slowing The Shade's hunger without having to give up his powers. Rancor's twisted mind could never forget the taunts and jibes of his fellow Necromancers over the feeble spells of his youth, and he vowed never to feel that weak again.
The bitter warlock had been an easy target for The Shade to manipulate when it had come to him in his dreams, offering gifts that would impress and frighten his peers and make him the strongest of them all. Accepting the bargain eagerly, Rancor revelled in his new powers, tormenting those who had mocked him, giddy with the thrill of intimidation. But as the spiral drew more and more on his magical reserves to feed The Shade, his Necromancer stripes began to darken and his eyes became hollow, and the secret of his magic was discovered. The spiral was declared a Lich and thrown out of the Order "lest The Shade infect anyone else" and he was shunned by all he met, eventually ending up alone in the desolation of the Ghostlight Ruins.
Realising he was in danger of burning up his soul if he continued using the dark magic, Rancor became feverishly determined to find a cure for his waning strength. After poring over stolen grimoires and forbidden manuscripts, Rancor finally managed to devise a potion that allowed him to absorb the magic of others to increase his own, though this vile method doesn't satisfy the appetite of The Shade for long, and the Lich is always on the lookout for victims when he spies a new Coliseum party entering his domain..
