HEX
"I don’t know everything. I just come pretty goddamn close."

xAqDFUI.gif
“... While the dragons of the Sea of a Thousand Currents are renown for their ability to tease information out of the aether, utilizing their intrinsic connection with the Tidelord to reveal the futures of their kin, the Water Flight is not the only Flight privy to the art of divination. From the augury practices of the Nature Clans of the Shrieking Wilds to the covens of capnomancers who inhabit the Blacksand Annex, every element of dragon across Sornieth has its own way of beseeching the powers-that-be into granting them insight.

“The most curious of practices is that of osteomancy, popular within the Scarred Wasteland and practiced by shamans and priests across the realm. It is uncommon to find a clan that is not in contact with one of these ‘bone oracles,’ though most clans do not have one among their ranks. This is because many osteomancers live solitary lives away from their kin in an effort to keep their minds and spirits from being altered or ‘corrupted’ by impure ideals and biases. It is a common belief among Plague osteomancers that isolation preserves one’s connection with their Goddess and their ancestors, and those who seek their aid are often limited in the amount of contact they can have with their chosen oracle. Indeed, many osteomancers will have intermediaries in the form of familiars and sprites in an effort to avoid directly speaking with their clientele.

“A dragon seeking an osteomancer’s aid approaches their dens with offerings of bone--scapulas are favored--which are then given to the osteomancer for use in their readings. The bone (or bones) in question is cast upon a pyre and allowed to heat until it cracks, after which the osteomancer ‘reads’ the damage. The exact manner of reading is unknown as the typical osteomancer is tight-lipped about what different fissures, fractures, and breaks mean, but none can deny that they are hauntingly accurate, perhaps on par with the seers of the Spiral Keep themselves…”

-- Observations of Practical Magecraft, Chapter XVII

"I have always been impressed with Hex. She’s always carried herself with the utmost professionalism and integrity, which is difficult when it comes to matters of what the commoners call ‘fortune telling.’ So many oracles are willing to peddle out their gifts for the most petty causes in exchange for a few coins, but not Hex. She knows good and well that her powers are an artform and wasted on trivialities.

“I am equally impressed by her accuracy, as I do not believe I have met an osteomancer in years passed that has been able to hone in on the future with such clarity. Usually, it is riddles for the recipient to puzzle out themselves, but Hex hardly ever leaves doubts. And she never holds back, no matter how terrible and grim the reading.”

HISTORY
Hex is the ambassador to Clan Elsewhere from the Clan of Sleeth, and was gifted to Earthquake as a hatchling as a show of good faith. While Earthquake was confused as to why he was given a child as a present (which, to him, seemed unorthodox and perhaps a bit heartless), he and his mate gratefully took her and raised Hex as their own. That said, Hex has stayed in close contact with her biological parents and has a turn far more similar to them than anyone in Clan Elsewhere, being a studious, dedicated worshiper of the Plaguebringer and an adamant follower of what she calls “The Old Ways.”

That is to say that, in a clan where the ways of Earth and Plague are honored in equal measure, Hex is something of a splinter in the paws of a few. However, most would be hard-pressed to admit that, considering that she is one of the most useful among them.

How so? She’s an osteomancer, using bones to foretell the future by heating them until they crack and reading the damage done. She’s frighteningly accurate, but very particular about who she does readings for and protective of her methods. To date, only two dragons--Vesuvius, a good friend who went missing during The Flauros Incident, and Fornax, her current mate--have been privy to how she does the things she does. Mostly, this is because they’re Fire dragons who are necessary to help her in her tasks, and because she trusts them enough to keep their gobs shut. This is especially true of Fornax, who'd rather cut off her right leg than be subjected to small-talk from... well, anyone.

Hex is well known for being a bit of a witch, stubborn and difficult to deal with in even the best circumstances. She’s protective of her family, protective of her friends, extremely judgmental, fairly elitist, and none too patient with dragons of other Flights. What she lacks in tact she more than makes up for in loyalty, and so long as The Abandoned needs her, she’ll be there to read whatever bones they lay at her feet. If they ever betray her trust, however...

... Well, it's fair to say that Clan Elsewhere may have a problem on their hands.

LADY ASH
Hex doesn’t know if Ash is really a lady, but it’s an old joke from an old friend who went missing during The Flauros Incident. In fact, Lady Ash was inherited after her friend’s disappearance, with Hex being the only one willing to take her in. She’s fond of her in a sad way, but spends a lot of time trying to avoid her since it triggers some awful memories. She wouldn’t want anything to happen to her, however. It’s all she has left of the fallen.

Since she has so many issues dealing with the grief Lady Ash brings with her, much of the care for her pet gyre comes from those closest to her. Specifically, Aftershock, who has a particular fondness for animals and was equally ruined by the Incident. He very much understands where Hex is coming from--he has boxes of his late sister's things that he can't bear to look at--but he hopes very much that she'll come around. After all, Lady Ash is grieving, too, and is far more attached to Hex than himself.
