Traveling Dragon wrote:

Uh-oh, looks like this keen-nosed traveling trader wandered a little too far from his home lair (sgkat #158838), and now he's off to see the world! If ever you feel the urge to exalt, he'd really appreciate it if you could just return him home instead, or to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, located here.
frv1.png Myron appreciates the aroma of a good smell, from the sweetness of blooming flowers to the homeyness of baking bread. Now he's taken to the road with a collection of his finest perfumes in search of fellow connoisseurs in the hopes of trading for unique scents.

Of course, "unique" does not always equate to "good". Myron wants to find some of those less-than-appealing scents to see if he can incorporate them into his perfumes in such a way that makes them palatable while still honoring their aroma profile. It's an ambition that requires mastery of chemistry and magic. And while Myron's chemistry skills are well-developed, he doesn't have much talent in magical manipulation...

While traveling with a group of traveling merchants, he met Ellabe, a botanist. Myron was surprised to find that she had a sample of the Amorphophallus titanum flower, or "corpse flower," sealed among her collection. I must have that smell for my collection! he thought. He decided to ask Ellabe if he could buy the flower from her. She agreed.

With her help, Myron was able to distill the flower into its base essence. The smell was so bad that Ellabe needed to seal the bottle with strong barrier magic to keep the smell at bay.

While staying in the Celestial Pyres clan he did not find any new scents. However, he did make many new friends and experienced the magic of the tunnels that keep the clan cool. He studied with the two dragons that help control the magic of the lower tunnels and they spelled his vials to make sure the heat of the Ashfall waste doesn't evaporate his perfumes.

Myron knew that a city just had to be rife with smells of both the palatable and vomit-inducing kind, and Mavenlark was more than happy to provide. The Arcane artisan trade clan was home not only to an array of high-class botanists, performers, and cooks, but sewers and rats, too. While there were few direct sources for the mirror to bottle, there were plenty of notes he could take on their profiles for later use.

Imagine their surprise when the Rosso Rickettsia clan received their first visitor to ever ask them if they had any "unique scents," whatever that possibly meant. While it was true that Plague's territory was riddled with odors of rot and decay, putrid and vile smells that tended to be rather off-putting to outsiders not used to the landscape's foul aromas, Myron had already smelled something similar when he'd met with Ellabe earlier, and such vapors didn't phase him, nor excite him. Nothing that the pestilence had to offer thus far felt extraordinary in light of what he'd already experienced in a similar vein...

Just as he was preparing to leave, feeling disappointed at having found nothing new and sensational for his work-in-progress perfumes, he was stopped by a clan-member that had decided to humor his odd interest. "Why don't I just give you a tour of some places of the clan - we've so much more to offer you than appearances would suggest. Perhaps you can find what you're looking for!" Upon hearing this, Myron nodded, trying not to get his hopes up, but was eager to see what his newfound guide would show him.

Little did he realize how expansive the clan actually was. Myron witnessed a miniature industrial city where a small group of automatons roamed free, their machines and mechanical bodies smelling of oil and smoke. From here he collected a sample of some of the fuel that supposedly kept the automatons running smoothly, wondering if robots could smell, and if they did, would they find such a scent appealing, just like how biological creatures often find their food more delectable should it also come equipped with an appetizing aroma?

There was a floating palace that utilized the same types of magic and devices keeping the great Cloudsong of the Windswept Plateau airborne, and high in the sky it was breezy, smelling of bamboo and light, airy scents that wafted across the sky. Myron had to wonder at the powerful display of magic here that kept it all afloat, as he still relied on the help of others to fortify his own magical spells. He decided to perhaps take a souvenir of some of the plants living at such a high altitude, hoping it would remind him of what he'd experienced here to recreate that in a perfume someday.

There were grand halls that were kept most immaculate and cleaned to perfection, and had a sort of refined scent to them that could only be dragon-made to ensure they felt welcoming. It took a little bit of time, but he and his guide finally tracked down the dragon responsible for the concoction used to give off such an air. After some bartering, he painstakingly managed to convince the other to give up one of their closely-guarded bottles for his collection, wondering how he could make his own spin on the scent it contained within without mimicking this artisan's work too closely.

He was briefly shown a chapel that he could only describe as "unnerving," that had a rather foreboding feeling emanating from it. Myron thought he could just barely detect the smell of copper or some other sharp, metallic scent - which was odd, considering that there was none in sight, and although he did not linger here for long considering the circumstances, he jotted down some notes in his journal about the vibes he'd received from experiencing it.

Next, there was a rather mysterious group of dragons that were surely hiding some fantastic stenches behind their clandestine endeavors, but he was told that he wouldn't be allowed in the area. Devising a plan, Myron tried to sneak into the domain of these dragons when he thought his guide wasn't paying attention, and was only met with fierce resistance from the inhabitants. Agitated about his antics, these dragons wound up giving him a vial of a dark, sticky substance just so that he would no longer pry. Myron sniffed at the icky goo, only to start coughing at the vapors he'd just inhaled. Quickly, he sealed the vial again, satisfied that it smelled of... well. It was something alright.

Finally, his tour-guide led him to the outskirts of the clan's territory, telling him of one final location that might be of interest to him before he departed. Listening intently, Myron made a mental note of what the guide had said, then bid farewell, journeying to the place he'd been told of. Here he met a very curious gaoler, who seemed as though they were young, but it quickly became apparent they were nothing of the sort. When he explained his quest to the other dragon, the gaoler affixed him with a very hard-to-read expression, then grinned.

"I have perhaps what you seek."

Without warning, the world around Myron changed, startling him - thankfully, all of his possessions were being carried in a satchel, so that he could hold onto them with ease, or otherwise he might've dropped them in surprise. He was now in a forest that expanded eternally outwards, its trees enveloped in the warm hues of autumnal embrace for just a moment before flickering into dead, lifeless husks of what they were, the scene turning from beautiful to ghastly within mere seconds. The mirror glanced around, all sorts of indescribable scents tantalizing him. It smelled strongly of wood and ash here, and yet similarly to the chapel, there felt as though something was lurking just out of reach in a rather ominous way, as though he was in danger. It sent some shivers down his spine, and his body couldn't tell if it was cold, or hot.

He wasn't quite sure if he wanted to be here, but his determination for unique scents was strong, and Myron just knew he had to document this somehow. It would make quite the perfume if he could master this aroma! But before he could properly explore the place, reality warped in on itself once more, leaving him back where he started. Miffed, Myron turned to the gaoler, who seemed to be the gatekeeper of this place, intending to demand that they return him to the woods so he could properly collect some kind of sample, when -

Myron's shadow moved of its own accord, and he froze, staring at it. The same scent he'd experienced moments before of impending danger resurfaced, with all of its intricacies and terror. The gaoler merely grinned at him before vanishing, and Myron was torn between feeling thankful and incredibly horrified at the latest addition to his menagerie of unique scents. Well... at least this one wouldn't take up one of his precious bottles allotted for the mission; it would just be eternally with him now, whatever that meant. The mirror decided it was time to depart from this strange place, having acquired many new and wondrous odors for his collection.

He was definitely leaving this clan's territory as soon as possible. It was, of course, because he was excited for new possibilities of whatever scents lay beyond the horizon! It had nothing to do with anything else, that's for sure!

(Does he discover new scents in your clan?)
