On the outskirts of a bustling marketplace, where only people -arms filled with trinkets, costumes, and false magic- leaving the grand ordeal ventured by, sat my small little stand. Dull, brown wood, adorned with nothing but the wear of the wind and rain.

I sat there with a wooden stool, happily watching my bags and bags of gemstones and jewels. One of my buyers was supposed to come this morning, but it appears that he got caught up somewhere. I fidgeted with the snaps and zippers of the heavy dusty bags on my shoulders.

It didn't matter anyways. My other main buyer would be arriving any minute now. I eyed a particular small bag that had been waying on me ever since I picked it up at the base of a tree in the Starwood Strand. The sooner the sparkling pink gem was sold, the better. It didn't belong in my collection, and empty bags meant more room to collect anyways.

“Why hello there,” A voice purred from behind, making my feathers stand on end and muscles freeze up. The buyer.

“Can you please- please uh- stop doing that?” My voice was unfortunately small, but it was enough to get Umrtia to move from behind him to the front of the stall. She had removed her traditional face covering to reveal her eyes of endless void.

“Aw, why, you don’t loved getting little surprises from me?” The purple had a voice sweet like honey but as fake as the next one. I was very aware of who she was, and how she loved to charm people. Her threatening armor told a different story, but that image never seemed to be in her way- she had no problem reaching into people’s personal space, and that much was proven as she snatched the hat right off my head. “Why are you wearing that buffoon’s hat still, you know all that ‘bad luck’ is just-“

“It is not fake, my dear,” Oh no. “I’m just protecting the lad,” Oh no. “You do not want to mess with bad luck.” Umrtia’s depthless eyes somehow filled with fury -fury that was quickly hidden with a pleasant grin of course- as she whipped her head around to gaze upon the male coatl arriving to the stand.

Constello. My other buyer, the one that was supposed to arrive an hour ago. “Why is this imbecile here?” A clipped, blunt question as the male sauntered up.

I opened my mouth to respond, but Constello seemed to be in his usual mood—talkative. “And why are you here? Why are we all here?” He slapped a hand down on the table, making me flinch though neither of the buyers seemed to notice, “Fate.”

Umrtia scoffed, shooting him a glare accompanied by a snarl, “I’m here to buy my wares, don’t give me any of that crap right now, you know nothing of fate.”

“It’s not like you do instead, my love.”

“You disgust me.”

Umrtia and Constello continued to exchange a series of jabs at each other, but I checked out of the conversation. The only thing that distinguished them from each other was the drawl of a drunken man that was truly sober and a the sickly sweet sounds of charming snake. I had heard it all before, which was why I usually tried to schedule them to come at different times. That plan wasn’t foolproof.

I closed my eyes for a moment, a headache overwhelming me as the two seers argued. It usually never got to him, but today just felt off. It was like walking through liquid. More pain, lots of pain, sparked through his head. It would be so easy to sleep, to sleep forever and ever, to let the silver rivers flowing around him to sweep him away into the unknown. “Help.” A voice? No… no… no one was speaking…

“Arcke, why did you pick that blasted stone up?” I cracked my eyes opened to see two dragons peering over me: Constello and Umrtia. I was on the ground. I was on the ground? “Arcke?”

“Wha…?” I mumbled, slowly moving to sit up, but Constello’s arm on my shoulder kept me down.

“You alright lad?” I blinked at him a couple times, still trying to decipher what had just happened. It was like I just awoke from a dream, and I was grasping at straws to keep fleeting memories. Was there a silver river? No… no… maybe? A hat was placed on my head, and I snapped back to focus on Constello. “That bad luck is real, you know. Got to keep that hat on.” A rueful smile from the coatl, I knew he was trying to make me feel better, but confusion was all I felt.

“Why did you have that pink stone with you? You could’ve collapsed on the road home, or worse. It was dangerous,” Umrtia told me, almost like a gentle scolding, but I still felt too out of it to understand what she was talking about. I think the two seers could probably tell, as they only waited a little bit before gently pulling me to me feet- even then, Constello stayed close.

“Do… do you mean the one in…” I squinted my eyes as I tried to orient myself. My stall was a mess, with all the bags and boxes opened up and torn apart. It appeared that I had fallen where I had been standing, and by the small smudge of blood on the stall corner, I likely had hit my head. “that pouch…?” I mumbled, pointing to where an opened and empty pouch sat in the grass.

“Pink Chalcedony, hon,” Umrtia said gently, something different in her expression. Worry? From her? “Don’t ever touch it again. Only arcane dragons can handle its deep magic.” I managed a hummed ‘okay’ in response, and I watched as Umrtia and Constello exchanged a glance. Knowing them…

“Am I dying now?” I asked softly, a hollowness in my own voice that was new to me. I understood what the two seers saw that my eyes missed, and if they were both worried for me, that only meant one thing.

“No! No, no, my lad, don’t be worried about such things. M’lady here wouldn’t let that happen to you,” Constello spoke quickly, but Umrtia didn’t glare at him for the “m’lady” like she usually would. Something was very wrong. “It’s just-“

“Arcke, why don’t you just sit down while we sort out what we want to buy," Umrtia interjected, peering above my head. It was true. I am dying. The two Seers knew what would happen to me, and if they were both concerned, especially after that thing with the rock...

Before I knew it my legs took action. One moment, I was standing there in shock, the next I was just running. To where, I did not know. I heard Constello shout after me, but I didn't stop. I just ran.
