Biography

Vanya Detective
Sardonic, quick-witted, and gloomily attired, Vanya is not what most would consider to be a personable dragon. She'll take you in with her piercing eyes and wry smile, and she'll tell you exactly what's on her mind, the good and the bad. Any complaints about tactlessness are batted aside with a careless retort, "Why should you want me to lie to you? Are your feelings really so fragile?" Arrogant, rude, and harsher accusations are all taken in stride. She doesn't have time, she says, to worry about mincing words for delicate constitutions. Some of that arrogance, it must be said, is earned: Vanya is an excellent detective, and hasn't failed to solve a case yet.

She's passionate about hunting down the truth and bringing criminals to justice. Murder cases are her particular interest, the stranger the better. The Pearlcatcher doesn't tend to answer questions about her past, but those who know her suspect she has some personal investment that drives her. She pursues her cases with a single-minded intensity, seeming to only remember the rest of the world around her after a case is resolved. She isn't entirely a workaholic; Vanya does take time to pursue other interests and socialize with those few special dragons who tolerate her company in between cases, but her work is her true passion.

Her ability to solve complex crimes is helped by her unusual talent for speaking to the dead. Vanya can see ghosts, and with a bit of effort, she can make contact with them, collecting statements and testimonies from the victims themselves. Getting a suspect description from the deceased is a much easier way of finding the perpetrator than asking everyone in town if they saw anyone shady. Vanya does still practice more mundane methods of investigation, as ghosts aren't always reliable sources of information, especially those who died particularly traumatic deaths. Many are confused and hazy, or too wrathful to carry a conversation. Still, she prefers to get as much information from them as she can, to get the case resolved more quickly and completely.

Death and the Underworld are one of her particular fascinations, even when she is not working. Her morbid interests are, quite possibly, another reason most dragons prefer to avoid her. She doesn't usually volunteer the topic, but she doesn't shy away from talking about her interactions with the dead when asked. She'll happily talk your ear off about gruesome murders and eldritch mysteries, especially after a drink or two at the tavern.

Her skill and intellect are undeniable, but so is her strange and abrasive personality. It's a good thing she isn't, as she says, "here to make friends with every fool in town."

~*~

Every dragon knows that one day, they will die. As they grow old enough to understand what death is, they begin to realize how fragile their own life is. It is easily broken in a moment of carelessness, or in a fit of passion; it may burn out slow and long, or be snuffed out in an instant. Most don't like to think about their own mortality. Only a very few spend their entire lives preparing for that moment.

Unfortunately, there are some things you just can't prepare for. Being murdered, for example. Vanya's memory of the event is still hazy, unclear, but so clearly does she remember the pain and the shock. That last, desperate gasp of breath, and the thought, "Of all the ways..." Nor was she prepared for the reality of what came next: the dark, cold place, the voice hissing in her ear, "What price would you pay?" The fear that settled into the heart of her, and the desperation that tore the answer from her throat: Anything.

Coming back to life was more painful and more exhilarating than she had ever imagined. She could not remember those who had killed her, and she certainly didn't want them to come back for another try, not after what this Second Chance had cost her. She left before they could catch up to her, traveling far away to begin her second life anew.

Memento mori (Latin: "remember that you have to die") is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits.

Memento mori has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character by cultivating detachment and other virtues, and by turning the attention towards the immortality of the soul and the afterlife.

This curse would be traced down his lineage. All Moros' children were destined to die, like any dragon. But they would be given a second chance. It was up to the children if they would accept the bargain.

"What is dead may never die."
