bio ❧ A scion of the Banded Tiger Clan and the captain of the Smoulderguard, Xianhong is - much to his chagrin - a household name in the Cinnabar Kingdom. He is commonly seen patrolling the streets, a more open approach to public safety compared to his predecessors. As a result, the people know him very well, though they are only intimately familiar with his presence and not his personality. Pragmatic and stern, he rules with an iron fist and sharp-witted reason. Off-duty he is just as stoic: his room is bare save for a few personal belongings, and he spends his time training alone or doing calligraphy in an empty room. When spoken to, his usual response is a straightforward comment. Xianhong does make an effort to joke, knowing the value of casualness, but he has an absolutely terrible sense of humour and never delivers his joke with the right timing or gutso. He does at least have a sense of sarcasm, though that is often taken at face value by others. As ancient laws dictate, the Smoulderguard is a martial force separate from the military of the Cinnabar Kingdom. Because of this, anything they do is not subject to the same laws. This means that Xianhong has all the authority to rebel against the Vermilion Sovereign, for it wouldn't be considered illegal. It is his sworn duty to protect the citizens, and if rebellion is the only solution, then he will do it.

backstory ❧ The Cinnabar Kingdom rarely engaged in conquest outside of the Ashfall Waste, but at times they marched to their allies' aid. One particular excursion was to support their ally, the Xe'aihat, against an invading clan. They had sent General Zhan to complete the task. Within a fortnight, it was done: the enemy had been utterly crushed, their corpses littering the fields. It was during a sweep of the battlefield for survivors that Zhan discovered a Wildclaw child. The hatchling looked no older than ten years of age, and was digging through the corpses trying to find something. Zhan knew it wasn't safe for him, so they took him with them. The first time Zhan tried to pick him up, he bit them. When Zhan later asked for his name, he said he didn't have one, so Zhan decided to adopt him, naming him Ying. It was difficult for Ying at first: he was fussy and aggressive, often getting into fights with other clan members. He struggled with his lessons, frequently skipping them to the frustration of his tutors. Many of Zhan’s clanmates admonished his decision to raise Ying, but the Gaoler didn’t listen. He simply opted to teach Ying personally and taught him meditation to control his temper. All of the Gaoler’s efforts paid off, for Ying grew up into a composed and diligent warrior. In his coming-of-age ceremony, Zhan gave him the name Xianhong, to reflect his scarlet wings and the fire of his soul. From there, Xianhong joined the army, his journey aimed towards joining the Emberguard. Given the prestigious nature of the organization, they could only allow a few trainees. Xianhong contested with Luqin for a position, deepening their rivalry. - xian asks questions about origins but zhan can't tell him bc they don't know - incident where xian gets into fight with another scion and scratches her, driving her to bloodlust. zhan is able to control the incident and - while they aren't mad at xian - tells him he can't let his "curse" out of control. zhan tells xian to wear gloves while he learns to control the "curse" - xian tries to control "curse" but can't, begins wondering why. an effluvial crow traveler sees xian and asks about some stuff, xian is unable to answer and the crow is p confused because "why wouldn't you know, you're a crow aren't you" - xian travels to place where zhan found him, finds cathbad and learns about the fate of his parents + his identity. he is VERY mad and realises how unfair it was that zhan took him and raised him unaware of his truth (difficult topic needs thought). also begins questioning the kingdom's ideology bc it led to his parents dying? needs thought - xian returns and gives up quest to join emberguard, letting luqin win it easy. luqin is FURIOUS bc "how dare you give up so easily, it's insulting to me." they fight, xian uses crow wing eye on luqin. he drops his sword (gift) and walks away while luqin yells at him for having no honour - xian joins the smoulderguard, gives up inheritance, and here he is lol

trivia ❧ - His given name means “eagle” while his courtesy name means "scarlet." - He earned the moniker "Vilehand" due to his Effluvial Crow ability. He's not very good at controlling it and wears gloves to prevent accidental contamination. - He identifies as genderqueer. - In his human design, instead of wings, he wields a pair of fans with the signature Effluvial Crow eye markings on them. I'm the kind of FR artist who's really boring with their human designs    Initiative/Haste... Persistence/Tenacity... Adaptability/Dependence...
