A B O U T
Skipjack works closely with Calypso to plot the ship’s courses, having years of experience navigating around the violent tempests that batter western coast of the Lightning territories. Both dragons are outspoken, often engaging in passionate debates over the best route. The Captain trusts their judgment and lets them work out the decision between themselves, adding his own expertise when relevant.

Despite the volume and intensity of their arguments, the two seem to get along quite well, and Skipjack is often seen riding on her horns or head to get a better look at the horizon. He’s a bit too light to safely climb up to the crow’s nest, especially when they approach the stormy Lightning territory, and Calypso is happy to oblige.

While Calypso is far too well-mannered to do so, Killian does like to poke fun at the fae’s size, giving him the nickname of “Kipper.” In turn, Skipjack will wryly remind the pearlcatcher that he was once thrice his size and could have easily throttled him. However, it’s all in good fun and the two get along almost disturbingly well.

Kip has also begun to develop a friendship with Cinnabar, the ship’s rather sullen carpenter. Both have experienced a sudden and drastic breed change as adults, and Skipjack is one of the few dragons who really understands their situation. Though they are reluctant to confide in any dragon, Skipjack is always willing to listen.

H I S T O R Y
Skipjack spent the first few decades of their life as an imperial dragon. Like many non-ridgeback piscivores born into the coastal areas of the Shifting Expanse, they joined the lucrative fishing trade, providing Stormcatcher’s children with a steady supply of seafood.

To earn an additional bit of coin while ashore, they would volunteer as a subject in one of the many experimental laboratories set up in the city of Goldensparc. Most involved simple surveys, flight tests, or the occasional blood sample and compensated participants fairly enough that Skipjack felt comfortable returning for many years.

However, there were a few far less reputable companies scattered throughout the city, those whose experiments were far more invasive and more extreme than what was advertised. Skipjack volunteered for a rather ordinary study that turned out to be very sinister indeed: forcibly changing dragons from one breed to another.

Nearly a fortnight later, he awoke from a medically induced coma in the body of a fae. Though he managed to escape from the facility when one of the other victims, a spiral-turned-guardian, broke loose from containment, the damage was done.

Skipjack and the others did receive a reasonable settlement when the corporation was dragged through the justice system for their highly unethical practices, but there was no way for him to return to his original form. Imperial breed change scrolls hadn’t existed in Sornieth for millennia, leaving him with only two options: accept his new fae form, or go through another traumatic change into a different breed.

Skipjack has remained a fae for the last few years. They’re slowly getting used to the extreme size and weight differences, and seem to have made peace with their new body as much as they can. They have even learned to project their voice using Lightning magic stored in the antennae-like structure on their head, making them sound unusually loud for their current form.
