Rescuee
My story starts how most hatchlings' do, I'm sorry to say. Hunger, darkness, and fear. Like millions of dragons before me, I was bred to be sold, and then exalted. You've heard this story before, haven't you? If you spent any time here in The Cove, then you'd know that every dragon here has a similar story. Hunger, darkness, fear. It's like a chant in some clans, where you live half dead because you fear what you'll see if you open both eyes. This is my story, like any other dragon here. But there is one difference. I rebelled.
I hated everyone in the Sea of a Thousand Currents, and everyone there despised me. I was the most troublesome piece of property they'd ever owned, which I think is why they chose to sell me and not go through the pain of leveling me themselves. I fought them, tooth and claw against steel and blade, and I still have the scars as reminders. I didn't want to die, I wanted to run. But there's only so many places you can go under the sea when you can't breath the waters.
When I was at last too irritating to stand any longer (the whole kingdom sent in complaints about my screams), they swam me to the surface, heading for the trading post in the Tangled Wood, for that was the quickest and easiest way to dispose of me, apparently. However, for dragons of the sea, they were unbelievably incapable with their knots. Just as we were nearing my end, I slipped from my bonds and flew off, faster than I ever had before. They chased me, cursing me and all my ancestors up to the first generation, but I was desperate, and a desperate dragon can outfly the wind.
I flew far and fast, the dragons still chasing me, but now with a whole gathering of angry dragons, and my strength was failing quickly. I began faltering and grew closer and closer to the ground below me, until I tumbled down to earth and lay there, unable to move. This is the end, I thought. This is the end of the nameless life of a dragon, when suddenly, someone stepped in front of me. She shone like the sea at sunset, and stars glittered on her scales. The dragons chasing me had landed by now, but didn't approach. They, too, simply stared at the new dragon until one of them found the words to speak.
"That there is our dragon. We were taking her to the market." The strange dragon didn't speak at first, she simply studied me. "Well?" the first dragon hissed, exasperated.
"Tell me," the dragon answered, and her voice was comfortingly soft, yet terribly cold. "Who's land are you on? You're on Mistral territory," she answered her own question. "And as far as I know, when you lose a piece of property on another flight's land, it's no longer yours to claim."
"But she ran away!" protested the chasers. "We were going to sell her!" The strange dragon suddenly stiffened, and she rose up to a height higher than everyone else, her wing-tips like trees, casting shadows across the grass, and when she spoke now, her voice echoed like there were hundreds more dragons, and her eyes glowed with fury.
"Leave this place now, or the next century's growth of reeds will feed upon your rotting corpses, worms! Crawl away while you still have your life." I covered my head with my claws, and my pursuers fled yelling and crying out as fast as their wings could carry them. I lay still, terrified, with no longer the ability to breath out of my fear. At last, the dragon spoke again, and her voice was gentle and soothing. "My name is Nevaeh, little one, and yours is to be Sveta."

The Ascent
I was welcomed with open arms into Mistral Clan, and they gave me my name, Sveta, which means light. I chose to live in The Cove with the many other dragons they'd rescued, just like me. I practiced fighting with Starling, the Tutelary of us hatchlings, and soon I was faster and stronger than I had ever been in my entire life. Because I wasn't "kidnapped" from the marketplace as most others were, however, I was able to visit the rest of the clan freely, and I spent most of my days flying in the Crescendo, practicing my flying skills.
It had been fourteen years since I'd been rescued, and I was nearing adulthood on the fateful day I decided to be among the gathers for the D.A.H.E. I remember flying over the Reedcleft Ascent, looking down into the horribly deep and twisted pathways of water carved into the land, when I saw a dragon flying towards me. I stopped and hovered in place to watch them, and to my utter surprise, they dove straight into the reeds far below, and I soon realized why. They were being pursued. It felt like a flashback, like something had come full circle. It was my chance to be Nevaeh. Except his pursuers stopped, and the dragons below me couldn't fly at all in the Ascent. He was crashing into the walls of cliffs, and faltering lower and lower.
With a cry, I dove without a second thought, chasing after him. I'd never flown in the Reeds before, and it was as exhilarating as it was terrifying. There was no time to think about my decisions. I was faced with a reed, I turned. I was faced with a cliff, I spun to the right. My breath was caught in my throat as I neared the dragon, a silver-ish Imperial, and I crashed into him. We both tumbled down at first, but I gripped his claws in mine and focused only on not falling to my death into the rocky rivers below. I spotted an outcropping on a cliff, and landed on it with him, both of us panting and completely exhausted. Neither of us spoke, too tired and breathless to be able to summon the power of words. However, he finally mustered the breath (and perhaps the courage) to say something.
"Thank you," he mumbled, staggering to his feet and wincing in pain. "At least I didn't break anything." At least you didn't fall to your death, I thought hotly, but calmed myself, although I didn't hold back my sarcasm.
"Just the thank you would've sufficed. What were you thinking?" No Skydancer born in the wind flight would've made such a foolish decision, to dive unexpectedly into the ascent without thinking, but he just shrugged.
"I was escaping. I'm a runaway fodder." Oh, I thought, not having expected that. He seemed sullen, but as I studied him further, I could see it. The ribs, raw scales near the wrists, and that defiant look in his eyes.
"I'm sorry," I finally said. "It's hard."
"It's hard, isn't it?" He suddenly looked angry, and I was surprised by his temper which reflected my own. "Wouldn't you know. I haven't eaten anything in three days. They were starving me, less expensive and still good for selling is what they said. You don't know anything about what I've suffered." But now my own fury flared up, and it matched his. However, when I spoke, my voice was cool, and even.
"I was once nameless. I was once starved and beaten and viewed as nothing more than a slave. I was just like you once, so don't you dare tell me that I don't understand your suffering." Silence.

The Aerie
I brought the imperial to The Cove after we'd rested, and he was named Erstad, but I didn't think much of it, because at the time, I had become a celebrity. Dragons praised my brave actions in the Reeds, and seemed much more impressed by it than even I had been at myself. Soon, Icicle, the clan leader, invited me to her house for tea, and I accepted the invitation, knowing what it was for, but never did I expect what would come from it.
Icicle wasn't the only one at her home when I arrived. Songbreeze, the Wind Representative, was there, along with Carmela, lead in battle and defense, and Nevaeh, my rescuer all those years before. I knew that this type of group could only mean one thing: A big decision was about to come, involving me, and I suddenly thought that perhaps I was going to be rebuked for my behavior, or that something had gone wrong, but I didn't need to worry, for punishment was the last thing on the four dragons' minds.
"Sveta, you wonder why we've brought you here today," Icicle began, and I nodded, fearful, but everyone else smiled. "You did a wonderful thing, that not many could achieve, and I think you're just the dragon we need for our Aerie." Aerie? I didn't understand, but I felt relieved at least. Seeing my confusion, Songbreeze continued, her light voice filling the room like music.
"Too many dragon lives are lost battling the Crescendo and Reedcleft, and I think the whole Plateau could use a good flier like yourself. We've always thought of organizing a rescue team that could navigate dangerous areas quickly, and we think you're the perfect fit." I still stared, unable to comprehend what this meant. I still didn't think what I'd done was very impressive.
"So, if you're willing, we want you to be the dragon to lead this." Now Nevaeh spoke, and her voice, gentle as always, comforted me, and I nodded with wide-eyes, which made her laugh. "The Aerie hasn't been set into motion yet, but you are old enough, and skilled enough. We want to promote you to Captain of the Aerie. You can recruit whatever dragons you wish for your team, and you will receive funding from all across the clans in the Plateau, because they've heard of what you've done, and want this rescue team as much as we do." The Aerie... Me. Captain. Captain of the Aerie.
"What do you say, Sveta?" Carmela asked. "If you agree, we'll even give you this gear." She indicated towards a pile of folded apparel, and her face broke into a smile, and soon mine did too.
"I accept."

Erstad
The very night of my promotion, I lay on my bed at The Cove, still mulling over what had taken place, and trying to plan out what I would do. I thought of the ways I could recruit, perhaps look at the fodder in the marketplace and rescue Skydancers who could fly quickly. I had made up my mind that the Aerie would consist entirely of Skydancers because we were the most nimble of dragons, and although spirals could fly just as well, they were more fragile, too, and I didn't want to risk any injuries. Being restless, I eventually left my room and almost ran into the Imperial Erstad I had rescued earlier that month. We both fumbled for words, but like before, he found his tongue first.
"Hey, Sveta. Do you wanna fly?" I stared at him, trying to decide how to react. 'Do you wanna fly?' Hmph. I was about to turn him down and go back into my room, but he looked so abashed and his eyes seemed to plead straight to my soul, so I gave in and agreed. We left The Cove and soared out into a blustery night, the wind yanking at our wings. I was worried about Erstad's ability to fly, but he seemed to do fine, so I ignored the worry. We didn't talk at first, simply flew, but then he spoke to me, again.
"Do you want to see something cool?" I shrugged, not caring much for whatever this strange dragon called cool, but he seemed to take this as an ecstatic yes, and grinning he began gliding down, back towards the cliff face where The Cove was located. I followed, intrigued despite myself, and although he looked at first like he was going back into our home, he continued to dive down towards the sea.
"Wait!" I stopped him, and we stared at each other, hovering. "We can't go down there. It's dangerous." It seemed ridiculous now, that the newly promoted Aerie Captain would be afraid of the water, but he shook his head, insisting that I follow, so I did. We glided down towards the sea, and where the waves lapped against the cliff side there was a cave, and we slipped into it. All was silent except for the ocean, wind, and occasional drip of water. I wondered what he had to show me when he breathed a gentle flame onto a torch, and the whole cavern lit up. Whoa.
The walls glittered like a million jewels had been poured over them, diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, rubies. Light danced over the walls, and I found myself speechless. This is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Crystals by the thousands were to be found on every inch of the walls as I stood in ankle-deep water, lighting up the cavern and bouncing around the small space like a living thing. I couldn't find any words to describe the awe I felt, but it didn't matter, for when I turned, Erstad was gone, and in my talons was a necklace of a purple crystal. I smiled and clutched it to my chest. That was the beginning of a relationship I've never regretted.

Today
Now, it's been six years, and I'm the official captain of no less than seven other Skydancers. Every day we fly out over the Ascent or the Crescendo in answer to someone's plea for help, and every day we bring home a lost dragon. I help train the occasional hatchling when Twlight, the leader of D.A.H.E. asks it of me, but in general my job is to rescue others, and I've been doing just that. I never get tired of the joy and gratitude I see in the faces of the dragons I rescue and their families. It reminds me of my own gratitude towards Nevaeh, a dragon I will never forget.
After that night in the Caverns of Cordellia (that's what we named it), Erstad and I would go flying nearly every night, and where he had apparently instantly fallen for me, I soon fell for him, too. I wear the necklace he gave me as I fly, and even if none think it worth anything, I know its worth, and it is priceless to me. We wed, actually, during the Mistral Jamboree, and traveled to the Sea of a Thousand Currents once more to have one nest together. We had three hatchlings, all of them Skydancers, with two girls and a boy, but I don't think we'll be having any more for the time being. I love my family as it is, and in general, I love my life. I risk myself for others every day, but it's worth it, every time. And I don't think I regret anything, not even the beginning of my story, because I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for it.
