 Jiang's parents were Hadan the Nocturne and Marjani the Imperial, both of the Shadow flight. He has one sibling, a Nocturne sister named Whistler. Their father and mother had no other hatchlings. He was born in a lesser lair nestled in the Driftwood Drag, and his sister remained there with their mother. Their father was exalted.

Jiang's name means 'river', because he was hatched on the banks of the river delta. The river runs straight through the Tangled Wood from the Sea of a Thousand Currents to come out across from the Everbloom Gardens of the Viridian Labyrinth.

Jiang's interests, however, were drawn to the Sunportal. His fascination with that, and all things Light, concerned his parents and sister. Jiang felt that Light and Shadow did not exist in spite of each other, but because of each other. He felt that rather than seeing them as separate and opposite, that they should be seen as codependent, two sides of the same coin.

His belief drove him to the Arcanist's domain to study at the Tourmaline Archives, searching for a way to unite Shadow and Light within himself. This pursuit is all-consuming, and Jiang has no interest in anything else.
