First generation. To be the first of a bloodline, formed from the elements themselves, or to completely lack a past, stolen as an egg. It was an especially powerful term when regarding Imperials. The purest children of the Lightweaver, most thought. Such drakes were commonly among Sornieth's oldest and most powerful aside from the deities, revered and respected. Even the children of such mighty pairs were desired by many clans, as their natural power lent itself well to hidden talents.
---
Stelmaria didn't know most of her siblings. As was common in Imperial families, her elder brothers and sisters had scattered to the far corners of the world when they came of age, fleeing the uncertain curse lingering in their bloodlines. She'd always thought it was nonsense. All the stories claimed multiple elements were necessary in the revival of an Emperor - and the beast Luminax seemed further proof. Staying in one's birthplace should have been the answer, not leaving it. And yet so many did.
Even her parents. Their verdant green eyes betrayed them. She'd be lying if she said she hadn't lost a little love for them after learning of Emperors.
Many of her siblings took up arms in faraway clans, finding meaning in fighting to protect.
but few of them ever cared to think of home.
There was a time before the Expanse, she knew. It was blatant in the difference between the vivid blue eyes of her and her siblings, and the verdant green of their parents'. When she had first learned of Emperors, uncertainty took root.
Now, though, she's not so naive. It had been centuries since Imperials first came to be. There were so many dead ones now in every flight that safety could never be assured. The only escape was to trade one's form for another - be changed into another breed - or find a gap between worlds.
And so she remained in the Expanse. She pored over books, cast spells long into the night, memorized custom after custom
There were many tales of Emperors, most used to frighten hatchlings and keep them close. Some believed that only the oldest Imperials were most at risk, the ones closest to the Lightweaver's purest essence. Others believed that they were the only ones not at risk, that their creator deity's power would keep the curse at bay and that younger generations - diluted bloodlines - had lost this innate divine protection. But what every story had in common was that multiple elements were necessary in an Emperor's creation.
- parents live in a hideaway realm, created to dodge the Emperor curse
- gateway appears only a couple times a year, usually when new kids decide it's time to leave
- non-Imp messengers have full access in order to maintain contact (have some kinda magic key or smth)

as another Imperial stepped into view.
"'Sup Murry," said Raz absently, only to double-take and snarl, for it was not their brother who had arrived. "Shade's ink, why the hell are YOU here?"
Larimar gave a benign smile. "To assist milady, of course."
"Why'd you have to bring him? He creeps me out."
"As you've said on numerous occasions," said Stelmaria blandly. "He's here because I believe he can assist. That is all."
"Oh yeah? Where's Murry? Didn't wanna come?"
"...I did not ask. I'm sure Murlaigh is quite busy. There's no need to trouble him for this."
Raz snorted. "Busy my foot, you just don't wanna be coddled."
"He does not coddle me.
"For bearing thunder in his blood, he fears the storm far too much."
