Murlaigh shifted quietly in the shadows of the giant archway that marked the entrance to the Sendal Square. The chatter of dragons about him was a constant drone, comforting white noise as the late afternoon crowds sifted around the center fountain and into the buildings that lined the courtyard. His eyes scanned the gathered dragons and their companions, seeking any sign of trouble even as his mind wandered back to his homeland and the sister he left behind. Always the blade to his sister's magic, Murlaigh had done what he could to be her guardian throughout much of her life. Yet she chose to remain behind in that accursed desert of an Expanse. He could smell it in the air there, the danger that swirled through the storms that ceaselessly toiled over their heads. Something was different, something was changing, and while the Shifting Expanse always stank of innovation for innovation's sake, this had felt different. And so he had left. He had asked his sister to accompany him, but she had said no, deciding instead to stay behind and search for some mysterious sibling that she somehow knew existed. Murlaigh's eyes drifted to the dark drapes that veiled the entrance to the Threads of Fate. Precious gemstones glinted in the sunlight, constellations against the midnight fabric. Maybe he could ask... No, they would be closed by the time his shift was over, and besides, that was his yesterday, and he had to focus on his today. He had finally found stability when he had left the Shifting Expanse with Karakas. Stability, comfort, and a place to just exist where everything didn't smell like ozone and pending disaster. If his sister chose to hunt for this strange sibling, that was her business. She wasn't a hatchling any longer; she was a powerful mage. She didn't need his protection. Indeed, she'd probably be insulted if he dare return for no other purpose than to guard her from harm. Still, what ifs danced in the corners of his mind as he sat at attention, waiting for any sign of trouble within the square. What if he was wrong, and Stelmaria did need him? What if this missing sibling was in The Source, where unknown experiments were crackling and crescendoing to Murlaigh didn't know what end? What if the missing sibling wanted nothing to do with them? What if they weren't even a dragon anymore? What if...? What if...? What if...? Murlaigh shifted his weight again, willing the worries farther back into the depths of his mind. Stelmaria would be fine. They would all be fine. Or else he would return and tear the Shifting Expanse down into the ocean with his own claws. |
