Notes~

  • twin sister of Apollo
  • she was born to a wealthy shadow family and was content in the Tangled Wood; in fact, she even resented her gaudy plumage for making her stick out
  • Artemis was the mature, protective older sibling to her baby brother
  • one day, when a group of thieves jumped them and demanded they hand over their golden jewelry, Artemis did as they asked and Apollo refused
  • when the thieves attacked her brother, Artemis did everything in her power to protect him, but he was still badly injured
  • they joined the Twisted Reach clan, and Artemis quickly asked Angel to train her in combat, something her brother did not approve of
  • after learning how to fight, Artemis became a combat trainer to appease Apollo- at least she wouldn't be in the line of battle, simply teaching others- but at least she can protect her brother- a compromise they're both happy with

Lore~

The sun did not shine in the Tangled Wood, a fact about which Artemis’s younger but much taller twin brother often voiced his woes. Their father had been a light-born dragon, and Apollo had inherited that sense of warmth and brightness which Artemis had not. She was perfectly attuned to the Tangled Wood despite her garish golden feathers. Never had the young skydancer been pleased with this appearance, but never would she admit it, with her brother looking identical to her. Just a bit larger, with a wingspan that easily splayed over her own.

Artemis had plenty of time to reflect on this after agreeing to join her brother for a walk to the shadow-light border. He often liked to visit it just to watch the sunrise before they’d return home. Artemis had no issue granting her brother that small satisfaction. He was a kind, compassionate young dragon. A creative and fun-loving soul who did not mind going out of his way to make her happy. She could agree to do the same for him.

Apollo, unlike his sister, was pleased about his lightlike appearance. He flaunted his feathers with pride and did not wear much apparel. He often said he didn’t want to detract from the natural golden sheen of his plumage. Artemis wore the noble robes and golden jewelry that signified her wealth and that of her clan’s heritage, but only because as the elder sibling, she was expected to be head of the family when their parents passed.

Apollo had wandered just across the border and climbed onto a large boulder overlooking a peaceful green meadow. He sat back on his haunches and tucked his wings, violet gaze turned dreamily toward the first rays of light peeking over the distant mountains. The newborn light turned the sky into a mosaic of magenta and gold, blue and purple clouds shooting like lightning across the morning.

“It’s incredible,” he whispered.

Artemis rolled her eyes. “It’s pretty,” she said simply, sitting down beside him. “Much like starlight and the glow of the moon behind a gray cloud.”

“But the sun- it looks so powerful…” Apollo whispered. “Perhaps when we die, we become part of it. How wonderful that would be.”

“Yes, wonderful,” Artemis began preening at her feathers as the sun slid into place in the sky. As it reached its peak for the morning, she turned her head at her brother. “Come, Apollo. The others will be missing us if we don’t return for breakfast.”

“Two more minutes?” He turned his purple puppy dog gaze on her.

Artemis glared, but relented. She laid down on the rock and continued to pick through her wings while Apollo sighed dreamily. He sat there for another ten minutes before his elder sister clamped one of his horns in her talons and dragged him down the rock’s sloped edge. They began the long walk back to their village. It was one of the largest vistas in the Tangled Wood, wealthy and filled with noble bloodlines. Apollo and Artemis were no exception.

Unfortunately for them, their appearances made that fact all too obvious.

As they began their trek back toward the village, a twig snapped within a group of tightly-spaced brambles and pine trees. Artemis froze, sharply putting out a wing to stop Apollo. She narrowed her gaze in the direction of the sound.

“Apollo, run.”

“Wh-”

He was cut off by a ear-splitting screech. The sound only a mirror dragon could make. And that sound was echoed by at least a dozen others. An entire pack had surrounded the siblings, closing in, until their scrawny silhouettes were made visible through the dense undergrowth. Artemis dropped into a defensive position. She hadn’t a clue how to fight, but she’d be damned if these hounds thought they could lay a claw on her brother.

One large mirror strode to stand in front of them. He lifted his head when he spoke, though his words were little more than a hiss. “You must be from a very wealthy clan.”

Apollo opened his mouth to retort, but Artemis whacked him with her tail to shut him up.

“We’re orphans,” she said.

The mirror cocked a brow as he scanned their fine golden jewelry. The very same jewelry gifted to the siblings when they were very young… by their late father, no less. They were very protective over these valuable items.

“Lie to me if you’d like, but hand over your valuables. And we will let you live.”

The marauders closed in a bit more. There was no way the duo could run, no way they could fly or escape. There were too many of the attackers, and with fangs dripping with saliva, the only thing either skydancer knew was that they’d be killed if they put up a fight.

So with tears in her eyes, Artemis shed the only gifts of her father she had remaining. Apollo did not follow. Instead, he glared when the lead mirror slipped Artemis’s jewelry to his second in command.

“Apollo,” Artemis said sharply. “Give them up. Now.”

“No,” he replied with finality.

She understood. Apollo had been closer with their father. Closer to his element. That jewelry meant so much to him. It was the only real adornment he allowed himself.

But damn it, Apollo, now was not the time!

The mirror snarled and stalked forward, tail flicking in anticipation. “You better listen to the girl. Or I’ll rip you both apart with my fangs,” he bared his teeth to emphasize his point. “I’ll start with her,” four eyes snapped to Artemis.

Apollo closed his eyes as he obediently shed the golden jewelry, which was quickly taken into the talons of the marauders and passed among the members of the pack.

As the thieves turned to make their exits, Artemis turned to urge her brother back to the city, but Apollo was breathing heavily. A fury reached his eyes, one that she had never seen there before. He let out an angry shout and pounced onto the back of the mirror leader’s retreating form.

What happened next was a blur of fangs and blood, but it ended with Artemis pushing into the skirmish. She put talons into any piece of flesh she could find. Something blunt struck the back of her head and knocked her vision blurry.

Suddenly, a large shadow fell over them, and Artemis looked up as the mirrors seemed to vanish. A massive black imperial had pulled away each and every one of the marauders. He looked down at them both with a stern expression, right as Artemis lost consciousness.
