A blaze in the beginning meant "a mark made on a tree by slashing the bark". Travelling dragons would slash the bark of trees so that they could find their way back and forth. Removal of the tree's outer bark caused decay to the inner layers, which caused the trees to rot and die. Some travelers switched to using paint to mark the trees, although they were well intended, they used oil based paints, which clogged the lenticel tissues of the trees, preventing the tree from properly protecting itself. As ignorant dragons continued marking trees this way, the forest became infuriated with the dragons, summoning spirits of fallen trees to trap dragons in a labyrinth of trees with no visible escape. From one of these trees, a Veilsprun emerged, his scales and mane white from the paint that covered the bark he sprouted from. He was called Blaze as he led confused and lost dragons out of the labyrinth of a forest that he resigned in. Although he could not speak, white paint poured from his mouth when he attempted, the dragons always trusted and followed him. Tales of Blaze spread across the lands, though most believed that he was just a legend, but he only would show himself to those who truly deserved his help... Not much is known about this dragon. Many claim to have sighted him and many seek him out in hopes to see him themselves, but he is truly a mystery. Blaze took his teeth and put them in a jar, for luck. For he was told by older dragons that crossed paths with him, that a tooth fairy would come collect his teeth and grant him a wish per tooth. Although Blaze could not speak nor eat, cursed by the carelessness of other dragons, paint filled his mouth. Blaze communicated with body language and writing because of that. He couldn't leave the forest even though he led others out. As he explored the endless labyrinth, he ran into another Veilspun. She had eyes that darted around with a paranoia that Blaze found all too familiar. Fearful, skittish, that was what Blaze thought of this Veilspun. She had white scales, with lines of black. She snarled at Blaze, white paint dripping from between her teeth. Blaze's eyes widened with shock, he wasn't alone. He slowly approached her, handing her a small pebble as a form of peace offer. He recalled that long ago, a large Imperial told him "A pebble is an important part of nature, it can fill gaps and line riverbeds. Even the smallest things can have very important roles," Blaze set the pebble down at a small distance from the Veilspun and sat down. He hoped that giving her some space would ease her nervousness. He rested his head on the mossy forest floor, waiting patiently for her. She circled the pebble, examining it carefully before poking it with her claw. Once she figured it wasn't dangerous, she jumped happily as she played with the pebble like a toy ball. Blaze hopped with joy and tapped his chest as he walked towards her, slowly. She stopped playing as she saw him, she held the pebble tightly in her claw. She hissed as he came closer, but she didn't stop him. Paint bubbled as it dripped down her chin. Blaze slightly opened his mouth, revealing the paint that also filled his mouth. |
