Biography

The First Among Equals is not impressed.

The Big Lore Questionnaire
  1. What is the name of your clan?
    The Collective
  2. Is it considered a clan?
Clan is fine but it’s technically a commune.
  3. How did the name originate?
The First Among Equals named it when she sprang forth fully formed and got lonely.
  4. What form of leadership runs your clan?
The First Among Equals was granted total power within her demesne by the Lightweaver. She declared everyone equal but everyone else knows that she’s more equal than the rest of them. They’ve decided not to mention it.
  5. What is the main income of your clan?
They don’t really… do money within the Collective. Barter, I guess. With outsiders, it’s just generic treasure. It sits in a pile because the First doesn’t care enough to put it somewhere more secure.
  6. Are certain things more valuable than currency that would be used as such?
Hatchlings? Power is maintained by shipping interns to the Lightweaver, so that. You get casually ribbed for producing a small nest.
  7. Is your clan dedicated to one craft or few, OR do they specialize in many things?
They don’t do a lot that’s worthwhile. Technically, they make a living by beating up and looting lesser creatures, alchemy, and animal husbandry.
  8. Does your clan trade with other clans for wares, or do they prefer to keep to themselves?
They’ll take in travelers to train as interns. Otherwise, they’re very insular.
  9. Does your clan have any enemies?
The beastclans are NOT fond of them. Unfortunately for the beastclans, there’s not much they can do against magical, nigh-immortal lizards.
  10. Does your clan squabble with these enemies often?
Not squabble so much as casually trounce.
  11. Does your clan have many allies?
    Nope.
  12. Are there treaties or contracts involved in alliances?
All legal affairs are handled by the First, whose word is law within her demesne. It’s a magical effect that apparently cannot be overcome.
  13. Does your clan get along Beastclans or are they all enemies?
Enemies in the sense that dragons are an overwhelming force that the beastclans resent but can’t do anything about. The Collective’s official stance is to tolerate beastclans in the area unless they misbehave, or unless someone is hungry.
  14. Does your clan accept Beastclan members? Why or why not?
No - at best they’re considered funny animal companions. It’s extremely patronizing.
  15. If yes, would they have any form of issues integrating into your clan?
The casual racism would be overwhelming. Rather, I think some of the veilspun would be nicer than the rest of the Collective, because of their unique position as a separate swarm within the community. Still, anyone who chooses to stay among the Collective is showing tacit approval of the official stance, so attitudes would be fairly uniform.
  16. Is any specific race of Beastclans disliked?
The angrier they are, the more they are patronized.
  17. Are they treated like actual Familiars?
All non-dragons are treated like pets if they can be kept as familiars. They are allowed to wander freely within the Collective’s territory as long as they behave and submit to friendly interactions when prompted. It’s that or you’re food.
  18. Are there any races or animals treated as Familiars?
    IF NOT FRIEND THEN FOOD
  19. Does your clan celebrate the Elemental Holidays? Why or why not?
They officially celebrate the Brightshine Jubilee. The Lightweaver is a real entity who created their leader and it would feel rude not to.
  20. If yes, what do these festivities entail?
Brightshine is a time to honor the Lightweaver, which means sending interns in massive quantities. Disciples train diligently for the week leading up to the holiday, then they’re all sent off together in a grand parade. Other than that, holidays are a frenzy of activity wherein the alchemists shout for materials and every other able-bodied dragon hauls over piles of sand and rock to melt down so they can produce and sell festive cosmetics.
  21. Is any specific element more respected than others? If so, why?
They venerate the Lightweaver above all other gods, so they’re partial to Light, but the gods literally exist so being rude would be pretty stupid.
  22. Is any race of dragon more respected or more hated than others? If so, why?
The First doesn’t tolerate tundras for more than a few days because their forgetfulness personally offends her. She’s also been heard calling banescales ugly chickens, and it’s well known that she thinks gaolers are hideous and shed too much. The Collective doesn’t argue with her preferences.
  23. Can all forms of elemental magic heal?
Healing stems from basic magic, which all magic-users can wield. Elements are more like a filter placed over the well of basic magic that everyone can access. Healing through different filters will manifest in different ways but produce ultimately the same results.
  24. Is all magic absolutely elemental, or are there general forms of magic any dragon can use?
    Answered in 23.
  25. Is any certain magic more powerful than others?
Light magic is easiest to wield within the territory of the Collective due to their physical location but with experience the difference isn’t noticeable.
  26. Are there such thing as enchantments or curses? How would they work?
    All canon magical effects exist.
  27. Are tomes important to magic users? Why or why not?
They’re important to the Collective because BOOKS
  28. Are certain things or places able to amplify one's magical abilities?
Babies have an easier time learning magic in their own territory. Truly, any amateur will have a hard time “out of their element” but no adult wants to admit to being less than proficient at magic.
  29. Do dragon have to be in certain conditions to be able to perform their magic?
A dullard or a child or an invalid might need a boost (in the words of the First Among Equals).
  30. Can a dragon's magic become naturally more powerful over time or would they need some form of training to help them become more powerful?
An adult theoretically has access to their full powers, but practice allows them to work more efficiently, which can give the appearance of becoming more powerful. Working with a teacher can help. Most importantly, with age comes wisdom, and magic used wisely is the most effective.
  31. Can only Water dragons be seers? How do they receive future prophecies?
Just Water, and visions are rare outside of the Water domain. If visions come, they come in dreams.
  32. Does your clan have any dragons dedicated to researching and studying magic?
The strongest magic-users are the warriors of the Collective. The most studious dragons pursue alchemy under Baldwin - notably the Eyesore and the First Son.
  33. What about someone who gives advice or helps with magic/arcane matters?
The Eyesore might fill that role, if the question is not specific to battle magic.
  34. Can dragons use magic to shape or create things?
    Via alchemy, sure.
  35. Can one's magic influence or read someone's mind?
The First’s powers can influence others but not read their thoughts.
  36. Do your dragons use magic to attack others in combat? Can any element engage in magic combat?
Everyone who engages in combat engages in magical combat. All but the simplest techniques are augmented by magic.
  37. Do your dragons worship the deities?
They serve the Lightweaver and acknowledge the power of the others.
  38. Do dragons worship only the deity of their element, or would they worship another deity?
Worship is not the right word. They are subjects within the realm of Light.
  39. Are there dragons that don't believe in the deities or hate them? If so, why?
Mesmeros has beef with the RNG, which he treats as a cosmic entity. He is considered extremely eccentric.
  40. Are there dragons dedicated to convincing others to serve their deities?
Nope, serving the Lightweaver is the rule. If you don’t like it you can hit the road.
  41. What is exalting to your clan/dragons exactly? Is it noble? Foolish?
Lucrative. Hatchings go in, treasure comes out. In practice, it’s a lot like kids leaving a small town to live and work in a big city. They don’t have to go, they WANT to go.
  42. How does exalting work?
Hatchlings go in, treasure comes out. I don’t know, they just leave. The pillar is a stargate?
  43. Where would one go to be exalted?
Okay, fine, they go to the stargate pillar and leave through a wormhole.
  44. Is it considered blasphemous or crazy to not worship one's elemental deity?
Not worship, but service is mandatory. Rude not to? And the First will not tolerate rudeness.
  45. Does worship of the deities play a big role in your clan?
    It’s the economy, stupid.
  46. Does your clan have any strong feelings about Tidelord disappearing? Are any helping to search?
Nope. Sucks to suck, Water (/jk). Praise the Lightweaver!
  47. Do dragons that come back from exalting get seen as higher or lesser for leaving/being kicked out?
That doesn’t happen, but if it did they’d be the gossip for the next three decades. Hey, remember when you washed out as an intern?
  48. Does your clan or any dragon do any form of sacrificial ritual for their deity? Or offer any items?
The warriors of the Collective do the most work directly for the Lightweaver, otherwise no.
  49. Are any breeds stronger than another in any way? Or are all breeds equal?
Physical strength depends primarily on size/muscle density. As in canon, some of the smaller breeds have larger magical capacities.
  50. Can breeds of their "origin element" use their magic better? (Ex. Spiral using Wind magic)
    No, that’s a racist myth.
  51. Are your dragon sizes true to canon or are they more uniform?
Canon sizes only!!! I love tiny veilspun!!!
  52. Are all dragons similarly expressive or do they emote differently?
Fae can learn to emote in ways that other dragons can understand, and other breeds can learn to read fae expressions, but their canon behaviors are natural. Dragons from mono-lairs probably don’t learn different ways to emote. The Eyesore can emote but generally does not choose to in order to bother the First Among Equals.
  53. Are your dragons able to fly, or is wholly determined by their wing sizes?
Fly in canon, fly in real life.
  54. Do Ancients and Moderns get along with each other?
They get along but Ancients are considered oddities by Moderns, and Moderns are considered children by Ancients (even Ancients who hatched recently). It’s like elves and humans in typical high fantasy settings.
  55. Can your Ancient and Modern dragons breed with each other despite in-game lore?
Nope! Life does not find a way!
  56. Do Ancients and Moderns socialize regularly or do they both have their separate areas within the clan?
The Swarm is considered a separate entity within the Collective, and they are essentially allowed to self-govern (within the bounds of the First’s edicts). Ancients around temporarily for training mingle with the rest of the Collective.
  57. How did you clan react to finding Ancients?
For the first two, with disdain. For veilspun, *heavy breathing intensifies*. The First just really loves veilspun, man, I dunno.
  58. Do Ancients have a vastly different culture than those of Moderns?
The Swarm enjoy pranks, but the Moderns don’t always understand that a prank has been performed. The comedy doesn’t translate. For example, they’ve elected Flight Representatives and this is reportedly a prank of the highest order. Gaolers and banescales refuse to explain, but one gaoler, when he was made aware of the situation, snorted and rolled his eyes before refusing to explain.
  59. What about Obelisks?
The First isn’t a fan of them.
  60. Are there any ceremonies that might be breed specific?
    Yep. These, too, are pranks.
  61. Do dragons mate for life?
No. Their lives are long and monamory is not the norm.
  62. Do dragons look down on others for not having a lineage? (G1 dragons)
Parentage isn’t a big thing. It’s common to need to check hatch records to avoid close inbreeding. Then the Eyesore comes over and personally smacks them for forgetting their own relatives.
  63. Do you have any disabled dragons? If so how do they receive assistance for such? Are they considered less?
Not as such, but everyone is welcome to serve the Lightweaver in the way that best suits their own abilities. Ugly dragons are considered less by the First herself.
  64. Are your dragons in your lore anthro, human, or just simply dragon?
    Dragon
  65. Are your dragons more human-like in terms of intelligence or are they more feral/animal-like?
Their intelligence is recognizably like our own.
  66. How technologically advanced is your clan?
They live in the woods and eat bugs and beat up centaurs. Minimal technology is required.
  67. Does your clan grow/farm food, or do they hunt for it all?
    Hunting and gathering
  68. What does your clan do with abandoned eggs?
An abandoned egg is lucrative enough to prompt a trip to the market! As far as they’re concerned, life starts when the shell is breached.
  69. Does your clan have ambassadors/representatives? What do they do?
The Swarm has Representatives. They do… nothing?
  70. Do your dragons hold marriage ceremonies of sorts if they mate?
    Not a thing.
  71. Is architect important in your clan? Do they live where infrastructure is important or no?
They live in the woods. Sometimes they expand natural caves. The fae make nests out of sap and they are NOT STRUCTURALLY SOUND. It looks like overambitious barn swallows took over the place.
  72. Are there any forms of teachers to help with literacy/fighting/magic/history/etc?
If somebody knows a thing and you want to do it, you can ask. There are no formal teachers. It’s very much like a bunch of philosophers standing in a field, and you’d better hope the one you pick is useful.
  73. Besides leader, are there any jobs considered to be more valuable/ important than others?
Jobs are really just hobbies, even training disciples. Not worth judging somebody for a hobby.
  74. Does your clan have a library?
BOOKS in piles there is no organization whatsoever.
  75. What about cooks or any form of servants?
    You’ll ruin the meat!
  76. Do you have a prison?
The First’s power is absolute within the demesne and dissenters are expelled if they do not leave voluntarily. Sort of like WandaVision.
  77. Would your dragons have a trial for the offending person? How strict are the laws if your clan has any?
Everyone is equal but the First Among Equals is more equal than others and if you can’t talk yourself out of it and no one will speak for you, she’s going to give you the boot and not ask questions.
  78. What is the most serious punishment and the lightest punishment for a crime?
The boot is the most serious punishment - the First cares nothing for the world beyond her demesne. There’s also constant browbeating, for those who don’t break the rules but who she believes she can improve. Getting a wallop from the Eyesore is not terribly serious.
  79. Do Beastclans believe in any form of deity or God of their own? Do they try to convert dragons?
You’re assuming the Collective would deign to listen?
  80. Are there any planets that your dragons, or others, have found?
If other planets exist, they’ve read about them. Not big into astronomy, though.
  81. Are your dragons developing a way to go into space?
    No
  82. Sorneith canonically has 2 moons. What are their names?
Lunos and Raege. They’re named like people and there’s some old stories about them.
  83. Is the Shade feared in your clan?
Not especially, but that’s why they’re sending all the interns.
  84. Is there anyone that worships the Shade?
No, they don’t enjoy being destroyed.
  85. Does your clan believe in such a being?
    Answered above?
  86. Is there a certain dress code or expectation of style in your clan?
Wearing any clothes is frowned upon. It’s eccentric.
  87. What about food? Any food that is considered your clan's cultural food?
It’s best to eat many different foods. Bonus if you beat up a small animal for it.
  88. What of slang? Or sayings? What about swears?
“Lightweaver defend us/grant me patience/etc.” is a go-to for the First. Variations for dragons of other elements.
“By the First’s egg” would actually work for anyone who’s not the First.
Many of the Collective’s dragons talk about the First as “Grandmother” even if they’re several generations removed. Same does not apply for the Eyesore, he’s just Morpheus even to his children.
Standard English vulgarities would be acceptable, generally. Poop continues to exist.
  89. Are fictional books in your lore similar to books in our real life?
Books yes, and it’s common for books to have illustrations if they are high quality. They aren’t widely distributed, though, because they are made by hand, so storytelling is more common.
  90. If a dragon was to say try to invent something we have in our modern lives, like a TV or a car, how would other dragons react?
Confusion, like an old man trying to understand the internet. Assume it’s magic, of course.
  91. Do dragons have certain things we do? Like desks for writing, full beds, shelves, etc. Or would they be very different to compensate for their style of living/being dragons? (Like instead of beds, they'd have nests)
Other dragons might have those things, but the First prefers a simple life and piles of various crap everywhere. Nesting is fine but it’s a personal preference.
  92. Do other dimensions exist?
    No
  93. Does any form of afterlife exist in your lore?
No. Death is rare but final. It’s seen as a final rest after a very long life well spent by some, feared by others (especially Imperials).
  94. Do spirits exist? Can they possess or move things around?
    No, aside from canonical familiars
  95. Do dragons hunt for the paranormal, if such things do exist?
Only RNGeezus, who exists in our hearts.
  96. Are there any folktales or legends that exist within your clan?
Several stories about the moons, all conflicting. Making up Greek myth-style stories about the Eleven is popular, but understood by the wise to be nothing but a fancy.
  97. What about songs that would be commonly sung among your dragons?
Lots of subsonic humming from the larger breeds. The fae don’t sing but some enjoy interpretive dance that no one else understands. Veilspun do this thrumming thing with their wings that gives everyone else a headache.
  98. Are dragons assigned a job or can they be anything they please once they're a certain age?
Laissez-faire is the rule, but the First will “suggest” an ugly child might want to pursue service with the Lightweaver.
  99. Do some dragons sometimes eat outside their food groups?
Only if they want indigestion/explosive diarrhea/projectile vomiting. The garbage disposal breeds look down on those who can only tolerate one food type.
  100. Are gene/breed change scrolls a thing? How do they work?
It’s totally a thing and definitely magic. They cost money, presumably because other alchemists can make them but the Collective’s alchemists can only make Bogsneaks and alchemy genes. They change immediately and remember being the old breed/genes, but any physiological changes affect them completely. Cultural differences persist, so veilspun-to-coatl Yudaios still acts like a veilspun, for example. The breed-changed aberrations are all extremely uncomfortable with their new existence as their two heads are slowly diverging in personality but they all refuse to admit it.
