Born the eldest son to the King & Queen of the Fey Court; Melanthios was a very quite and serious child. He took to his studies very early; shadowing his father and mother as they held court sessions and being taught by various tutors about the hierarchy of the court. Melanthios learned very quickly that the court could be selfish and vindictive; only caring about their own goals and turning against those they disliked so strongly that it infected other members of the court. It was very easy for one to lose their good standing. Melanthios grew into an rather aloof and distant heir; he was careful with his words and watched others intently. He gained an reputation as a brooding and mysterious prince - and to his dismay many young fey in the court or their families began to pine for him.

He wasn't naive - he knew that most of the court were urging their children to try and win his heart so they could get a better standing and perhaps even his throne. Melanthios kept those who tried to charm their way into his heart at a cold distance; polite as he needed to keep the peace but dismissive when things got to forward. Infuriated and tired with the squabbling over his hand - Melanthios began to sneak away from the fey realm just to get some peace and quiet. He wondered often if his parents would soon begin to suggest he court one of his many suitors - their marriage too had not been started out of love for one another; they had learned to love and care for one another, but their union had been out of alliance and duty.

Melanthios spent more and more time away from the court and the fey realm - the other realm was a breath of fresh air; there were not courts to settle down, nor suitors to disengage. It was during one of these visits that Melanthios saw him for the first time. Melanthios' various trips to this realm had allowed him many chances to see the other breeds of dragon that roamed this land - but he had never seen one as beautiful as the coatl with the stars in their wings. Melanthios watched them from afar; something stirring within his chest as he witnessed them stargazing at the night sky. Melanthios began to visit this spot more frequently until one night - feeling bold, he stepped out from the shadows. He was worried he would frighten them away; but the coatl was unafraid - looking upon him with curiosity brimming in their eyes. There was not a sign of distrust nor envy. Conversation flowed easily between them and Melanthios found himself enjoying the simplicity of youth besides them.

Melanthios began to visit every night; where he would meet with the coatl and they were talk. They didn't give out their name - and he didn't push, the legends about the fey were very clear; never give them your name. Night after night Melanthios would find himself swept alongside them for the ride; sometimes they simply sat and stargaze, telling each other their hopes and dreams.

The coatl was genuinely curious, earnest and kinder than anyone he had ever met before. They knew not who he was; the way they treated him was genuine - unlike those of the fey court, this dragon seemed to care for him. They were also unapologetically free to their whims and desires - enjoying life to the fullest. Beneath it all - there was something lonely about them. Melanthios wondered if perhaps the reason they embraced himself so easily was due to the fact they were longing for companionship...When they did mention family they seemed wistful and resigned, moving on quickly. They never pushed him to share his secrets - they were understanding and always smiled and told him some new tale when their words skirted to close to the things he tried to hide away. He found himself falling hard and fast - but when his duties kept him locked away at the fey court his heart ached for them.

When he returned he found them worried - they had been scared something had happened to him - and he couldn't hide the truth any longer. He told them who he was - and to his surprise, nothing changed. The coatl was as kind and as trusting to him as ever. So much so; that they shared with him their own secret, his name. Astraeus.

From that moment nothing was kept a secret from one another. Melanthios shared his frustration with those of the fey court, his parents expectations of him and the demanding life he was destined to live in the service of others. Astraeus also shared his own troubles - his assumption was correct, Astraeus' family were large in number but their attentions were more hostile and annoyed than loving. Astraeus struggled to live up to his parents standards - to them he was flighty and too emotional driven. His other siblings were held in higher regard and distanced themselves from him to keep their parents favour. Melanthios found himself angered on his behalf - how could anyone not admire Astraeus for his curiosity and his kindness.

This boiled over - when one night Astraeus was late to their meeting. When he did arrive he was near tears, wings and feathers drooping. Melanthios was tempted to raze his family to the ground - to do anything to see him smile again. Astraeus had a request. He asked Melanthios if it was possible to take him away - if he could go back to Melanthios' realm. To be with him. Melanthios felt very conflicted - he was elated that his feelings were returned, but also anxious about the repercussions of taking an outsider to the fey court. Ultimately his desire to make Astraeus won out - his reputation amongst the court would have to be enough to deter others from objecting. He whisked Astraeus away after making sure this is what he wanted. It was evident from the start that this decision was met with anger - the suitors that had hounded him for years were spurned by his choice in partner, their parents - the members of the courts were outraged they'd lost their chance at alleviating their status through him. His parents were torn - displeased at a decision they deemed impulsive, but also happy at his own happiness. Astraeus stuck out - the only non veilspun in their realm and hard to miss. When Astraeus brought up if it was possible for there to be a way for him to change shape - to fit in to make it easier on Melanthios - at first he objected, he didn't want Astraeus to have to change himself to be with him. He loved him the way he was, and would never of thought to ask such a thing from him. Astraeus like always was firm in his decision and after many discussions on the matter - Melanthios relented.

With the help of advisors, Melanthios magic was able to give Astraeus a new form. Gone was the large body and fluffy feathers - now Astraeus was the same size as him, his body slender. His wings were just as beautiful - still an night sky turned pink - and now his new mane also shone as brightly. His smile was the same - even in a new face, it was the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen. Astraeus was overjoyed at the change - something about him became even more free and confident. Melanthios mourned little for the things that had been lost - his love was still the same in the ways that mattered. It helped they could now wrap around each other as they slept - a perfect fit.

The courts disapproval became more quiet with the change - but Melanthios was determined to keep them in line. To make sure Astraeus would never be harmed in his absence - Melanthios used his magic to give him a gift. Pink fireflies followed Astraeus wherever he went - guarding his back from any danger. If he was threatened - they would turn aggressive and Melanthios would know immediately something was wrong.
