Styx is the name of the river of hate; and is the first and main of the five rivers leading to Hades. In mythology, the gods were bound by the Styx and swore oaths on it. Zeus promised every oath be sworn upon Styx after she allied with him in the Titan War. The Styx had miraculous powers that could make someone invulnerable; like Achilles who was dipped into it as a child. The Styx is said to flow around the underworld seven times before reaching the center of Hades.
In ancient times some believed that placing a coin in the mouth or on the eyes of the dead would help pay the toll for the ferry across the river and into the underworld. If someone could not pay the fee it was said that they would never be able to cross the river.
