"There are some dragons born of earth that are fully encrusted in a carbon steel alloy. How this has occurred is not fully understood due to the nature of carbon steel not being a naturally found material. Some have theorized that perhaps dragons who are of a iron based hide while incubating in the egg are put under stress from their own innate magic, causing their iron hides to form into steel. Possibly due to how rapidly this occurs, the steel is of a high carbon quality which leads to oxidation of the steel when exposed to the elements. As soon as they hatch, their perfect metallic hide develops rust marks or flakes, each unique to the individual dragon."
