“You astound me.”

The frail messenger immediately turned to face the Wildclaw standing behind him. Her appearance was impressive, with orange, mane-like hair cascading across her shoulders, never mind the strange orbs of light floating around her. Both orange and blue light was onto the cavernous walls surrounding them both as a result, but a note of importance were her eyes..

A hue of the intense, yet most vibrant red. Horizontal, rectangular pupils spread across the iris that made her stare deeply unsettling to him. Given her heritage, and what he was warned of before venturing into the Forsaken Cave earlier that same day, Aseri was not looking forward to what the female Wildclaw in front of him had to say next.

“Do you really, and I mean REALLY, expect me to believe that my parents have written me a heartfelt letter, expressing their.. sympathies- a need to visit their daughter! After so many years?!”

Aseri held his tongue. He had received word from Saivax himself that Mayumi was not of the best character, and he did not wish to add fuel to the ongoing fire. He tried to look around, focus on something that wasn’t Mayumi’s wrath. The small collection of turtles swimming aimlessly in the water nearby did not seem to care all too much about the chaos around them. Perhaps they were used to this?

Aseri was quickly brought back to reality by a swift blow across his chest. Despite Mayumi being much smaller in stature compared to him, it seemed clear that she did not wish for his attention to stray from her in this moment.
“What is it about my turtles that seems so enthralling to you, hm? If you wish to remain in my good graces, keep your gaze on me, and me alone.”

He gulped. He should have refused Saivax’s opportunity, who cares about the vast riches he promised, clearly his offer was too good to be true-

“My siblings live their lives apart from me,” Mayumi’s voice spoke softly- cutting through Aseri’s panicked thoughts, her mumble was a stark contrast to what she was shouting moments ago. “My parents spend their time far away from this cave, people worry for me simply because of the way I dress, and all I have are my turtles. You can understand me for being the way I am, right..?”

Aseri’s heart began to soften. Maybe he had the wrong impression of her. She seemed so mean, and harsh... maybe she just needed someone to spend time with her. Someone she could rely on.
“Mayumi..” he began. She looked up at him, her eyes sharp, as if she were on the precipice of deciding whether or not to slice him into pieces after hearing her the way she was. “What is it, messenger. Choose your words wisely.”

There was that cold tone again. Aseri knew it was likely a way to scare him off, but he wouldn’t give in.

“.. I wish to stay,”

That was all it took for Mayumi to break out into a wicked grin. “You do?” She asked, almost sarcastically. “You really do? Oh, my darling messenger, I have waited long for someone like you to appear.”

Aseri began to feel his blood chill. Did he make the right choice? “Someone like.. me?”

“Oh yes, the fact that you wish to be with me says more than enough, you have clearly surpassed all other social relationships within my life at this point, who says I want this to end? Come now, I will introduce you to the others. They might not look in our direction, but they will know another has joined us.”

Mayumi quickly grabbed Aseri’s hand, and urged him to walk alongside her. He had no choice but to follow. On the one hand, he was happy to have gained a new home. His messenger’s guild had inadequate lodging, so he was at least guaranteed a bed here. And he was now in the company of a powerful dragoness, the daughter of Saivax himself. But on the other hand, no matter how hard he tried over the coming days and weeks, he could not shake the feeling that Mayumi’s apparent contentment with his presence was simply too good to be true.
