Funky & Avant-Garde Musician

Tywyn spends many hours practicing.

Tywyn downed his drink of ale, taking in the burn in his throat as he counted another day’s worth of coin. Barely enough to cover his stay, and his trip to the next town. The bard sighed, pocketing the change before a thief could swipe his scraps across the table. He had always aspired to a higher standard, transcendent works that would lift his audience higher, expand their horizons above and beyond. Yet, at the end of the day, everything went back to the material. He laid his head on his palm, idly listening to the music that animated the lively tavern. A few familiar faces, some new amateurs, but all the same derivative tunes. Nothing that made his soul truly sing. Nothing worth staying up for, as he began to head to his room.

A strong singular chord, cutting through the applause caught his attention, making the bard turn on his heel. A finely dressed coatl had taken his seat at the tavern piano, his head bowed as he felt the tune of his instrument. With an instinctive grace, the pianist closed his eyes, and his fingers danced across the keys. He started with a slow haunting waltz, before he added more, flitting notes like motes of light on a dark lake. Tywyn could feel himself humming the familiar tune under his breath, that which told a wondrous fairy tale, dancing on air. Yet, the musician evoked a different sense, all with a simple change of key and tempo. He wove together harmony and rhythm, evoking an almost tragic sense of loss, a yearning for fantasies that would never come again. He played like the piano was part of him, a voice that spoke in so much more than words.

Before Tywyn knew it, that sublime melody was gone, concluding with a lonely, solitary note. A resonating emptiness in the heart that such wonderful music had left behind. Fans clamoured in front of that wonderful musician, who humbly bowed as he exited the stage. The bard pushed his way through, eager to meet the genius of such a rendition. Despite his brilliance, the pianist was rather harried, shying away from the attention that was heaped upon him.

“That was a fantastic performance. I did not know that the Aria of the Windwalker could be rendered in such a way. How do you do it?” Tywyn kept his head up, maintaining the confidence of his performance, anything to impress such a genius.

“Well...I did compose it. I wanted to create an alternate interpretation, something different, a different way of doing things. It’s nothing too special, just something to get unstuck.” The pianist tilted his head, sheepishly scratching the back of his head. Tywyn’s eyes lit up. That was something they could have in common.

“A different way of doing music you say? Just so happens that that’s my specialty,” with a grin, he produced his faithful instrument, a purple-framed lyre, stringed with thin, ice-like strands. He plucked at the delicate threads, producing a note as clear as glass. “I’ve made a few ditties myself, people think that Ice music has to be all delicate or slow, but those people don’t know how to improvise.” The bard strummed on the strings, tapping his foot as he played a jaunty tune. The yellow coatl looked at him with interest, his eyes fixed on the chords. Time to reel him in.

“So, this might be a bit forward, but what about a duet? Maybe it’ll help that music block to have a different sound to work with. With your skill, we can make something brilliant! What do you say?” Tywyn presented his offer with a flourish.

“Ah, I wasn’t planning on more than one performance tonight…” The pianist began, before his fellow cut in.

“Oh come on, just one song? The crowd wants an encore too.” He turned, and saw the crowd of the tavern looking on expectantly. The pianist chuckled. It had been a long time since he had such an attentive audience.

“...Alright, it would be a shame to leave you hanging. Any piece you have in mind?” The pianist relented, seating himself before his familiar instrument.

“I was thinking we could just wing it, jazz style. And a one, and a two!” Tywyn dove right into it, setting the rhythm and baseline with his lyre. If a glacier could dance, it would through his music, a deeper bass that crackled like crunching ice. With renewed enthusiasm, the pianist began his art, finding just the right keys to follow the pace. They went back and forth, swapping between melody and bassline, the young bard surging with a new tune, emphasised with the gentle touch of piano. The pianist’s skill tied their differing styles together, their combined skills weaving a soulful melody greater than the sum of its parts. There was no plan or structure, just the purest expression of the zone, the liminal space of imagination and practice, brought into reality. A sound that was at once chaotic and uplifting.

It was over all too soon for Tywyn, as they found the natural conclusion to their mix. Reluctantly, he and his new partner bowed to the applause of the crowd, taking their leave from the stage.

“Another amazing performance my friend. It was truly a pleasure to work with you, some of your improvisation was genius! I never thought I would meet someone who could do such wonderful work. What is your name?” The bard praised with a smile.

“Gwenevere. Before you ask, yes, that Gwenevere. Besides, I didn’t do too much, you led the way with your lyre tune, it is incredibly unique. I do hope that I’ll get to listen to more of your work, you certainly have more potential than an old composer like me,” with a polite nod, the pianist turned to leave. “I really should retire. The beauty of music is in good hands with dragons like you.” Quietly, the yellow-clad coatl walked away, leaving the spotlight of the public eye once again.

Tywyn didn’t understand. Why would such a genius not want to do more of what he loved? Why would such a talented, beautiful artist resign himself to obscurity? The purple-clad bard wrote down the name of the musician that had enraptured him, and made his plans, to gather information, and travel.

It didn’t matter how far he would travel to meet him again. Together, they had made something truly ascendant, something that had sung to the deepest depths of his heart. And he would be damned if he never heard such a symphonia again.

A delicate musical chime announces the arrival of a lovely pair of new customers, they enter the shop along with a whoosh of cool air. Popular all season long, most visit Sornieth Shave Ice in their off season for their Spiced Indulgences; piping hot beverages to warm your spirit and your claws. In the cooler seasons most are huddled close, enjoying their treats and toddies, while the fireplace crackles and keeps them cozy. The atmosphere is busy, and the shop owner, with her happy smile, mixes her creations with flavorful colored syrups and sometimes a dollop of freshly whipped cream (sometimes two dollops). It is the most popular venue in the lair, and it is frequented by many denizens of the Fortress of Ends.

Tonight a couple of dragons, Efridis and Lone, are peering into the counter area, requesting a special treat; Halo Halo Hot Chocolate, a nice and hot beverage with flavors of a wide variety of sweet things, with hints of Red Bean. They watch the spectacle of its production with eager anticipation, and wait patiently for the call, “Orders Up!”.

Fun Project
Efridis and Hrima are favorites with the hatchlings of the clan; a pair of quirky dragons who serve as a fun Aunt and Uncle. Paint is always found splatted along the floor and walls, and both enjoy loud instruments and taking apart all of the machines that find their way into their workshop. Their kind dispositions and unique views on the world allow them to have discussions with all age groups. Offspring from this pair are energetic, eclectic and enthusiastic! They may arrive with a bit of paint in their feathers.
