Metal clangs heavily against metal as LIGNEUS strikes a red hot sword with a mallet. She huffs in frustration. She is no second rate smith; she is the best and her works will be perfect. She strikes the metal again, watching what was once a hunk of useless steel take shape into a beautifully shaped blade. Another strike leaves her ears ringing, but it’s a welcome sound. The ringing in her ears, the sweat pouring down her scales, the sparks burning her; it all reminds her of where she came from and what she does.
As LIGNEUS continues working, their mind flashes back to where they came from: a large family hailing from the Colonnades of Antiquity. They remember everything being cramped. There were always so many dragons bustling through the house. Their parents were merchants and tried to get LIGNEUS involved, but they wanted no part in the family business. They had no desire to sell vegetables at the bazaar.
No, LIGNEUS always saw themselves having a grander purpose in life. They wanted all the distance they could get from their family. They were hatched a gaoler, but that wasn’t a life befitting of them.
Another strike of metal against metal brings LIGNEUS back. She takes a deep breath through her nose and clears her mind of thoughts of the past. She takes a look at the gorgeous white steel blade. She plunges it into the water, cooling it instantly before beginning the sharpening process at the whetstone.
There are many other unfinished pieces lining the walls of their forge and filling baskets and buckets all over. They regularly make pieces for members of the clan. They make everything from delicate jewelry to metal support beams for houses. Always working for everyone else, LIGNEUS is known for being one of the kindest dragons in the clan. Though, being as tough as they are, no one messes with them. Not to mention, they could cause someone’s house to collapse if they wanted.
LIGNEUS, satisfied with the sharpness of the blade, sets it down on the workbench and begins putting together the hilt of the blade. They are content. Parts of them miss their homeland, but what dragon doesn’t? They love their new home though. They love their partner, for whom they are making the blade for, as decoration of course, and they love their clan. As they look around their forge, they are filled with nothing but pride.
