Biography

immortal necklace man my beloved

The newcomer came in, wings spread wide, and declared himself to be the Windsinger.

“That’s me.” the tan Spiral said, extending his arms. “I’m him. Absolutely.”

Waverider looked him over- the newcomer walked in as if he owned the place, sand-colored body contorted into an unnatural upright position. He dressed nicely- white tailcoat above a deep blue shirt, holes roughly cut out of it for the wings, and an ornate necklace that made his eyes hurt just from laying eyes on it.

He wasn’t green, or long, or with the sort of serene grace he would expect from his deity.

“I seriously doubt that.” He said, pausing a moment in his words. It had been a while since a new one came- a new strange individual with all their weird quirks. The lair had been quiet for a time a bit too long, and maybe this guy was here to shake it up. “But you found us. What brings you here, stranger?”

He sat down on the ground, as if he had no care in the world. Waverider noted that he seemed reluctant to touch his own necklace- he shifted it a bit with a twist of his head, while his claws would be more than suitable. It unnerved him- but the stranger himself appeared jovial and warm, as if he was used to this whole thing.

Most of the scared new dragons were timid, looking around as if anything would come at them- even one of the common chipskinks filled them with fear. Waverider tried to console them, to tell them that it was okay, that a chipskink could be taken out with only one stamp of a claw. Seeing a great Imperial tensing up at the sight of a Webwing made him feel like laughing, but that wouldn’t be right.

“Well, I heard good news about this place.” He said, a small smile on his face. “Telling me that this is where new folk go, if they don’t want to spend time fitting into a clan.”

“Are you lost?” The blue Spiral asked, looking over him again.

“Nope. I know just where I am.” He paused, looking around with confidence in his face. “Never mind. I have no clue.” The small smile on his face faltered for a moment- before coming right back up. “I don’t even know what I am! But I’ve been strange things before- this is no different.”

“Okay, well, come in.” Waverider said, motioning for him to follow. “We have space- not much, but we’re due for an expansion eventually- and we have some dragons planning to head out.” He turned backwards, watching the few dragons wandering around- some of them turned to look at him, curiosity on their faces.

“I’ll stay for some time, but I’ve gotta keep moving eventually. The Foundation needs me- and they’ll go looking for me if I don’t show up in time.” He laughed- “They probably think I’m out committing crimes, which I am not doing as you can see.”

He gestured around him, probably at all the crime-doing he was not doing. Waverider was about to speak, but the stranger’s words continued flowing- as if he had kept them to himself for too long and wished to vent them on the first person who was willing to listen.

“So like- I just showed up somewhere, last thing I remember, and this is NOT THE FIRST TIME, but usually somebody shows up to explain something- hey you’re not dead yet, congrats, you were out for like five days though and we were about to worry-” He took a breath, motioning with his front wings as he spoke. “So I showed up in here and somebody started yelling like WHO IN WINDSINGER’S NAME ARE YOU and DID YOU JUST KILL MY SISTER which I didn’t obviously, so I uh, asked them who Windsinger was and they got all flustered… so then I decided OH YEAH I MUST BE WINDSINGER I GOT IT.” He put his claws on his hips, looking rather proud of himself- and also like a man who lost their sanity.

“You’re not Windsinger.” Waverider said. “You’re most definitely confused. Do you not remember how you got here?”

He seemed even more confused by those words. Waverider had a feeling that he undermined the guy’s entire identity- he really thought he was Windsinger, probably because he didn’t even know who he was. He looked down at his own body, a look of fear on his face- a look Waverider had seen one too many times.

“Okay, let’s start from the top.” Waverider began. “If I ask what Flight you’re from, would it be one I recognize?”

“Is America a flight?”

“No.”

“How about Canada?”

“I have no clue what those are.”

The newcomer thought about this. “Florida? Everybody knows Florida.”

“Okay, that settles this. You’re lost- just as lost as the rest of us. You see- this isn’t even close to where you’re from. This is an entirely different world with entirely different things. This is nowhere you’ve ever been with nobody you have ever met.”

He laughed- “Ah, that does make sense. First time I’ve gotten myself into a place like this- although, never alone. Either way, you don’t need to make a spot for me. The Foundation will be coming for me soon enough.”

He seemed hopeful- Waverider knew that sometimes others came in, and somebody would run up and recognize them. Those were the best case scenarios, but a lot of the time nobody ever came. This guy seemed to think he would be rescued- it had been years and it had never happened to any of his dragons. Just the smile on his face tipped him off that the newcomer thought he was leaving.

The newcomer picked up on his confusion, holding up a claw to quiet him. “They work with this sort of thing. They’ve brought people out of worse places- within the month they’ll have me back and you don’t have to worry about me. Heck, maybe even less time than that!” He continued to think, words coming rapidly out of his mouth as they had before- “They’ve done this before. More than once. Not with me, but this...this isn’t that bad! They have stuff that can teleport me out of here or whatever, somewhere, this shouldn’t be…”

“The thing around my neck is valuable, anyway.” he said, touching the pendant for the first time in the whole conversation. “They won’t let me disappear with it. Besides, did I mention I’m immortal? Because that’s a thing too.”

He reached out a claw for the pendant, rather curious- the newcomer darted away as soon as he came close.

“Don’t touch that!” he said with a tone of panic before smoothing himself back out. “Please...don’t even get close to it. I actually do like you.”

He didn’t know what to say about that and only nodded.

“So like...I’ll be out of here soon. The immortal guy with the, uh, they need me for a ton of stuff. Valuable important stuff and of course the monthly stabbing, can’t forget that.”

Waverider dipped his head- it would take some time for the newcomer to figure out what was happening. He had done this dozens of times- too many times to count. He felt bad, but he knew what to expect. His clan hadn’t lost a dragon yet except for the few who dealt with their fates and left, starting a new life here. A lot of them hadn’t had much else to live for, and this was a lifesaver for them.

“Either way,” he said, giving up on convincing him- “you need to stay here until somebody comes for you. There’s an extra room in the back if you want it for the time being.”

“Thank you.”

“I can lead you there if you want- but if not, it’s just past the fountain.”

He turned his head to gaze further into the lair. “Well, I suppose I can find it myself.”

He turned around, starting to walk off- before Waverider called to him again.

“Hey, uh- do you have a name? I can put it on your door.”

“Don’t trouble yourself! I’ll be out of here in some time, and there’s no need to write my name on anything! I’ll remember where I stay.”

“I would prefer a name, at least. Just so I don’t keep calling you ‘the new guy’.” The real reason: he needed to get a nameplate made, just to mark the space. Any identifier would work.

“Well, you seem like a friend. Just call me Bright.”

He doubted that was their real name, but he would go with it. No need to alienate him any more.

“Well, nice to meet you. Feel free to head into your room- we’re rather friendly in here.”

He nodded, walking a fair way- he moved quick before finding the extra room, checking for anybody inside, before slipping in. Waverider watched him go for a moment or two before sighing and going back to his normal work.
