Moonstone has never realized his divine heritage. On the contrary, he's always thought himself an enemy of the Tangled Wood: his father, a lore thief of the Wispwillow Grove, was exiled when he dared to steal from his lady and often lover, the Shadowbinder herself. His last crime was taking young Moonstone with him — but the Spiral was but another relic whose appeal waned with time. While Moonstone and his father's relationship was strained, Moonstone was raised on the stories of his father's heritage. Their family had long ago been blessed by a dark unicorn in return for the silvered blood of its enemies, and with that newfound power that had conquered swaths of land, making dragonkind kneel beneath the crown made of sacrificed horns. The gods would not ignore their vast power for long. The Arcanist struck out at their clan that had festered across his lands, and in the wake of the violence their crown was said to be stolen by a jealous primordial. Left on his own after his father moved onwards, Moonstone satiated his desire to belong by investigating these ancient legends. Along his way he met with another who had the same curse, and together they seek to reclaim their crown and their kingdom, for themselves and their progeny. The Lightweaver's son, Cavador has enticed their loyalty by promising the crown to them if they swear their allegiance. In the face of the primordials against them, Moonstone and his love have chosen to follow.

Morwen and Moonstone consider their new bloodline to be Nightmares, for they often have shades of the sleep and dream abilities of their parents. Their children are raised to understand they are heirs of their lost land, and are encouraged to embrace the Shade in order to strengthen themselves.
