Biography

EALADHA
[ moon • prince ]

consort of the winter court | dutiful, introverted, dreamy

Ealadha [al-ah-ha] was born awash from the sea. His egg was found by the spirit of the moon: one of the Astronomer's fallen heads who often drifted along the shores, reminiscing of life hanging above the world. A lone egg drew the primordial's heart back down to the ground and gave him a purpose he'd never experienced. Cradled by the night, Ealadha's hatching was witnessed only by his adopted father and the lingering spirit of dawn, the namer of souls. Ealadha, the moon prince the dawn-spirit called him — and from then forward, Ealadha's place among the primordials of Sornieth was sealed. While most probably a mortal himself, his only family and friends were the cryptic primordials that dwelled in the world's folds. He was raised as a wise soul, far from dragonkind and their comforts. His moon father Kuu taught him the language of the heavens, the way the stars would smile and fall, how there were mysteries even the night sky wouldn't give up.

One such one was the Shade: a sentient darkness that had fallen down to Sornieth and threatened to engulf the planet completely. Ealadha's father taught him to keep a sentinel's eye upon otherworldly threats, especially during the new moon when he slept until it was born again. Most often, such vigilance was unnecessary. Ealadha never wavered in his fortitude, but he wondered if perhaps such paranoia was unfounded. His own life was young: it was difficult to fathom the stories of his father's existence, the times before when divine wars wracked the world's surface. Sornieth was currently in a time of peace. The Shade infected its artifacts, certainly — but it was stable, neither dying nor reproducing. Ealadha in turn was left to question his own purpose in the fates. Was he but a shell spit out by the sea? Was he forever but a prince of the moon, but would never be able to inherit it?

A form of an answer came one new moon while his father slept and Ealadha stood guard. Sornieth's veil between myth and reality ebbed and flowed, but most often so subtle it was attributed to magic, superstition, or coincidence. But on that night the fae Winter Court's magic spread itself in beautiful lights across the sky and Ealadha first witnessed her: the valkyrie, who guarded the veil but from the other side. They regarded each other warily, at first. She was no drake and yet no primordial; she was another creature entirely, built of magic and ice. When daylight came, the aurora faded and so did she — perhaps but a memory, if it were not how they found each other every winter's new moon. A curiosity blossomed, then sentiment, then something even like love, though neither could ever find the means to leave their home to be with the other.

Ealadha has questioned Kuu about mythical beasts that embody the plane beyond the material, but his father only brushed it aside as mortal legends. For a moment Ealadha thought to press further and say he'd seen one of them for himself — but then surely Kuu would become only more vigilant, and hide Ealadha away during the new moon when he could not guard him. Thus it still remains a secret, and Ealadha never asks whether Cherith hides a similar one of her own.

Cherith and Ealadha meet each new moon while the Winter Court reigns. Their children often have some affinity to the moon's phases and are born within the fae realm with Cherith, though Ealadha cannot face those who cross the veil without admitting his transgressions.
