Smith is the clan's smith, and Investigator is her assistant. He calls her Smith because her actual name is impossible for a dragon to pronounce, but the rest of the clan picked it up too.
Smith is better at delicate and precise work, but Investigator takes care of larger projects where strength is needed more than delicacy. He also collects supplies, such as coal for the forge (Smith refuses to use an enchanted flame) and the various metals, materials, and dragon-made specialized tools they may need.
Investigator acts as the clan smith for outsiders who might not be as friendly towards beastclans, but everyone in the clan knows Smith runs the forge; she practically raised Investigator and taught him most of what he knows about metalworking.
