PERSONALITY: Evander is a proud dragon who constantly compares himself to others. He puts on an air of confidence and detachment, but deep down, he fears lack of acceptance from his peers. Evander believes that it is better to be hated for what you aren’t, than ridiculed for what you are. His icy disposition often puts others on edge, and as such, he is generally found alone; sitting in the corners of classrooms, or going on solitary flights around the islands. It’s not that he doesn’t want to make friends, he just fears that if he gets attached, it will be harder to let go.

Evander’s classmates think he’s a bit melodramatic, except Hewn, who is never one to judge a book by its cover. Because of this, she is the only one who bothers to take time and get to know Evander. They’ve become good friends and through her, Evander has opened up to many of his other classmates. He still prefers to go off by himself, however, and is often found in his room, sitting amongst blocks of ice, and contemplating many things.

As a fighter, Evander’s great size and powerful ice magic make him a formidable opponent. Typically on the front lines of any attack, If something manages to get through Evander, you know it’s time to worry. Evander will throw himself at just about anything if he believes in what he’s protecting. Unfortunately, he has a great deal of confidence in his own powers, which leads to him underestimating his opponents. His belief that nothing can defeat him lands him in many unfortunate situations, especially when he gets caught in arial combat, something he does not excel at.

Divider-V-500.png EARLY LIFE
Born to a royal family in the fortress of ends, Evander was a prince, raised with a silver spoon in his massive jaws. His family had ruled their icy fortress for generations, and their proud lineage looked down with disdain on anyone who was less wealthy than them. As a hatchling, Evander adopted his family’s arrogance, and soon learned that the only way to earn respect, was to disrespect anyone who was beneath you. It was this arrogance that led Evander to explore the forbidden ice caves just outside his kingdom.

The caves were very ancient, and very magical. There were things frozen in there that predated the very earth itself. Stories carved through sculptures told legends long forgotten through time. The more Evander explored the caves, the more he learned things he wished he never knew. Things about how his family had achieved their success through lies and treachery. How they had made deals with things that were better left forgotten in their icy prisons. And that was exactly what these caves were: a prison. Lost in a terrifying labyrinth of horrors that dwarfed Evander’s imperial size, the young prince began to panic. The harder he tried to find a way out, the more lost he became, until he found himself standing before the most terrifying prison yet. In a massive cavern, suspended by rusted chains, was a block of ice larger than any Evander had seen thus far. Encased in it, it’s many faces frozen in a terrifying snarl, was an Emporer. It had all eleven heads, one from each element, and Evander recognized them as his predecessors—dragons that were supposed to be long dead, buried together and allowed to grow into one massive abomination.

Evander tried to flee, but cut himself on a protruding icicle. His royal blood sprayed across the ice and splashed onto the chain-wrapped cell. Cracks spread out from the small red droplet and soon the entire block of ice had crashed apart. Evander could only watch in horror as the Emporer charged out tof the cave and towards Evander’s home. Where the Emporer’s prison once stood, an Imperial marched towards Evander. As it approach Evander, he saw that it was no ordinary Imperial, rather an ancient creature disguised as one.

”Wwwhhat hhhaave yooouu dooone?” it hissed. Evander felt chains begin to wrap around his body and wings, and a sharp burning pain, as ice started to creep across his wings. Suddenly, the ground opened up beneath him and he fell.

ENROLLMENT
Fugitive • Ice Rep • Student

Evander’s ice-coated talons clinked on the cave’s stone floors. The ice hadn’t melted since he escaped his imprisonment, and Evander began to suspect that it never would. Looking around, Evander felt very uncomfortable. On his journey here, he had avoided large groups of dragons, mostly because he couldn’t stand the strange looks he got, but looking around the cave, Evander realized he wasn’t the oddest dragon here. Some dragons were wreathed in shadow, others had plants growing from between their scales, and still others glowed red-hot. Don’t get comfortable. he reminded himself. It was impossible to predict when they would find him, and he would have to leave.

“Evander Storm!” a voice called from across the cave. Evander approached it cautiously, and found himself standing before a long wooden desk with a Guardian sitting behind it. Perched on the Guardian’s head, was a Fae with a pair of bronze goggles on her eyes.

“Do you have proof of recommendation?” asked the Guardian politely. Evander produced a sash with an ice symbol on it, and the Guardian showed it to the Fae. She gave a single nod and the Guardian handed it back to Evander.

“Welcome to Fathom Academy.” he said with a smile. Evander’s eyes widened. A school? The letter hadn’t said anything about this being a school. Evander shook his head.

“This is a mistake, I shouldn’t be here.” he said, backing up.

“You’re wrong,” said the Fae, “This is exactly where you should be.”

“You don’t understand, I really shouldn’t be here.” Evander started to turn around, when the Fae disappeared in a flash of light and reappeared on Evander’s nose. She looked him straight in the eyes with her large, electric blue ones.

“I understand your situation Evander,” She said earnestly, “this is a safe place. The Icewarden sent you here for a reason. Let me show you to your room.” The Fae then turned, and without looking to see if he followed, flew towards a tunnel. Torn, Evander looked from the cave entrance to the tunnel and back, before sighing and following the Fae.

Grotesque-2-L.png STORIES Grotesque-2-R.png

Evander woke to feel nothing. It was as if his body simply wasn’t there. He tried to move something, but nothing would respond. The only thing that would respond where his eyes, which darted around anxiously. Everything around him was white and cracked, as if he were looking through a sheet of ice. It was then Evander realized; he was looking through a sheet of ice. He was frozen, in his own personal prison.
He screamed.
Not with his mouth, for that was impossible, he screamed with his mind. As loud as he could. He stopped only when he saw a dark figure moving beyond his icy walls. It was impossible to tell what it was, only that it was massive. Recognition came when Evander heard a voice inside his head.

Aaaaaaahhhh. Theeee liiiittle ooone aaawaaakensss. Weeeellcooome tooo yoooouuuurr neeww hoomme.

Release me!!
Evander yelled with his mind, Don’t you know who I am!? Then it hit him. He was no one, everything he thought he was was a lie. He wasn’t special, and he wasn’t better than any other dragon. The creature chuckled.

Yeeeessss.

How is this possible?

Doooo yooouuu feeeel iiiiiitt?

I am frozen, I don’t feel anything.
Yet as soon as Evander said it, he felt a kind of pulsing all around him. It was like veins of pure energy coursing through the ice and into his body, keeping his body alive, yet killing it at the same time. What is it?

And with that, the creature receded out of view, leaving Evander frozen, and completely alone.

Not completely. Whispered a voice in the ice.

Evander spread his wings and let the wind lift him up and across the glittering landscape. Though the ground below was white and cold, the sun shone warmly of Evander’s back, and he sighed contently, feeling at peace.

“Oi! Sleepyhead! Haven’t you had enough lazing around? Come on!” A white tundra flapped close to Evander’s head, a wide grin stretching across his round face. Evander smiled at his friend whom he had known now for weeks? Months? Years? Time was hard to tell here.

The tundra tucked his wings and dove towards the snowy hills below. Evander followed suit, his whiskers tingling with exhilaration at the sudden drop. The two dragons landed in a small valley, where the snow was thin and flower-dotted grass injected a pop of color to an otherwise, desolate landscape. The grass felt weird under Evander’s feet, mostly because he didn’t know what grass felt like—so it was hard to create an accurate fiction about it. To Evander, it felt like pine needles, sharp and uncomfortable. Evander quickly located a patch of snow and sat down.

“Ward?” Evander called to his friend. The tundra lifted his head from where he had been eating a patch of particularly green grass. “I never asked where you came from. I’m sure you must have done something to anger the Darks.”

“Well sure,” said Ward, swallowing, “I actually grew in a place like this; temperate, more green and brown than white, and beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. I should show you it when we get out.”

“Yeah, right. When we get out.”

“Hey! None of that! We will get out, and soon. You’ll see.”

Evander shook his head, but said nothing, it was no use trying to quell Ward’s optimism, and to be honest, Evander didn’t want to. It was refreshing to have someone who wasn’t bleak like he was.

“Evander. I’ll race you to the top of that hill.” Ward gestured with his head to the top of a small hill not far from where they were. Evander snorted.

“I could beat you there in one bound.” he said.

“Maybe, Maybe not. But we’ll never know if we just stand around talking about it.” And with that, Ward took off towards the hill. Evander laughed and pulled himself to his feet to follow. Evander best Ward easily, and as he sat at the top of the hill waiting for Ward to catch up, he turned his eyes skyward and frowned. A strange cloud hovered just above his head, and seemed to be growing bigger by the minute. After a while, Evander realized that the cloud seemed to be forming a massive crack in the sky.

“What’s up?” asked a slightly breathless Ward, as he came to a halt beside Evander.

“Do you see that?” Evander asked, gesturing to the sky. Ward glanced up, and then back at Evander.

“See what?”

“That crack in the sky.”

“I don’t see a crack.”

“Really? I mean, it’s getting bigger, like it’s going to swallow us, and there’s a white light on the other side. Is there a flaw in the dream?” Evander turned towards Ward, but the tundra’s face was apologetically blank. Then, Ward’s eyes widened.

“Wait! What if it’s your way out? Maybe your cell is cracking and you’re going to escape soon! You should go to it.”

“Or maybe the Darks are waking me up to torture me or something.”

“Well, you’re not going to find out if you just sit here and talk about it, go on!” Ward gave Evander a nudge and Evander reluctantly opened his wings.

“All right, here goes nothing.” And with that, Evander jumped towards the crack in the sky.

There was a blinding white flash and Evander found himself once again encased in ice, with the familiar feeling of being bodiless. This time, however, there was something different. A flaw in the ice. Evander had spent enough time in his prison that he had memorized every curve and crack in the icy walls, but this flaw was much larger, it was as if someone had struck the wall with a hammer.

Ward? Evander called with his mind. No answer. He must still be in the dream. Evander sighed. This was pointless, he should have stayed in the dream, sure there was a crack, but it still wasn’t enough to release him from his prison.

Suddenly, Evander felt a jolt of pain in his chest. Then another in his back. The sensation spread like creeping frost until his entire body felt like it was on fire. Evander threw open his jaws and roared. The ice around it Shattered and crumbled to the ground below. Evander continued to howl in pain as his muscles unfroze and reawakened, aching heavily from their lack of use. As soon as feeling returned to his wings, he threw them open and the rest of the ice cracked apart, hurling Evander onto the cold floor and chucks of ice rained down around him. Evander stumbled to his feet, clutching his chest as a feeling of cold hung heavily where his heart should be. Looking down, Evander gasped. His chest was glowing with a pulsating, icy blue light that spread out from his heart and seeped into his scales in veins of white. In fact, Evander felt new power throughout his body, power that didn’t feel so different from the veins of power that used to pulse through his prison. Breathing heavily, Evander turned a talon skyward and spread his fingers wide with the palms up. Closing his eyes, he focused of the cold inside his chest, and instantly his talon was encased in ice, and a flurry of snow danced up from his palm.

Evander tilted his head and considered this development. He had been rather useless at magic before his imprisonment, this must be a byproduct of being infused with layline energy for however many years he had been stuck in that ice. No longer panicked from being imprisoned in ice, Evander looked at his surroundings. He was at the end of a long corridor lined with more prisons like his own. They contained mostly dragons and beastclan members, with a few stranger monsters in between. Evander quickly scanned the cells, but he could not find Ward. He turned back to his own cell, now in ruins, and pressed an icy talon against the wall. He had no idea wheather this would work, but he had to try.

Evander felt the power in his chest and moved it throughout his body and up through his talon. The ice beneath his talon began to glow as the layline energy recognized its own energy.

Ward. He thought, nothing happened. He would have to try harder. Licking his chops, Evander tested his voice. It was cracked and unused, but he had to try.

”Waaaaarrrd.” He said, both speaking and thinking it at the same time. His voice sounded strange, deeper than he remembered, and more confident. His voice vibrate through the coridor and into the ice, following the energy Evander had sent out.

Evander? Ward’s voice echoed back across the energy lines. You sound weird, like a Dark.

”Yyeeaaahh.” Evander forcefully cleared his throat. ”I mean, yeah. Ward, I’m out. I escaped the prison! I can’t find you though, you must be imprisoned somewhere else.”

Amazing! Wat’d I tell ya? I told you you’d get out soon!

“I’m going to find you.”

Evander...I don’t think you should.

“What?”

You’re out! You made it! Now you need to go, quickly, before a Dark finds you.

“I’m not going to leave you.”

Yes you are. I’ll be fine, I have the dream. Also whichever dragon they imprison in your place. My time will come, and when it does, I’ll find you. Now go sleepyhead!

“I will come back for you.”
Evander turned and charged down the corridor. Just a Evander was nearing an exit, his path was blocked by a hulking figure. It was the Imperial who had imprisoned him, though Evander knew it was really a Dark.

”Geeeeet baaaack tooo yoouuurrr ceeell!” it roared charging at Evander.

“No!” Evander said, planting his feet and throwing his jaws open. A stream of ice flew from his mouth and struck the Dark Imperial straight in the chest. The Dark Imperial simply shook it off and continued his charge. Evander summoned the white energy in his chest and felt the temperature in the cavern drop a few degrees more. This time when he shot the line of freezing cold, the Dark Imperial was caught up in a massive arch of ice which froze him solid. Evander had no time to relax, however. He could already see cracks forming around the trapped creature. Evander attempted to escape by flying out of the cave, but when he spread his wing, they felt strange and heavy.
