The first thing you remember is falling.

Falling…______
Falling…
______Falling…

And then a splash.

You are scared. The constant warmth, the constant rumble from somewhere above and around you; they are gone. Now it is cold. Why is it cold? You do not know, and it is terrifying. The cocoon surrounding you no longer feels comforting; now, it is stifling. You want out, out, out. The shell shatters around you, and you tumble into a shallow pool, your world suddenly expanded beyond your wildest little hatchling dreams. It’s beautiful.

There is a sound behind you. You turn with uncoordinated movements, and find yourself staring into the eyes of a creature about as large as you. The webs between its hands remind you of the fins you can barely see out of the corner of your vision. The creature vocalizes again, and you try to copy it, a crooning sound forming in your throat.

It tilts its head, you mirroring the action, before it lets out the same call a third time. Each time you hear it, it reminds you more and more of the disembodied rumbling from before the fall. Whatever it is the creature wanted, you seem to have satisfied it, as it promptly turns and jumps past you.. Even though your legs do not want to move in the same way as the creatures, you know instinctively you must follow it, and so you try to hop after it anyways.

And as you struggle to follow the example of the creature that is now waiting for you to catch up, there is only one thought running through your mind.

This is your home now.

It was a miracle that Rana survived when the roost of tree sap that she was laid in collapsed and fell from the Shrieking Wilds to the wetlands below. She was lucky enough for her egg to fall in a shallow pool of water, where she hatched in the presence of a frog carrying his tadpoles to a bigger pond, who, despite being the same size as her, seemed to think she was one of his tadpoles too. With no dragon in sight and nowhere else to go, she followed him to a new home, and grew up with the polliwogs.

For years, she lived among the frogs, even as she grew to be three times larger than the largest amphibian in the Worldedge Wetlands. She followed their example, learning how to hunt and how to hide, and in turn guarded them from whatever predators might try to prey on her family. Even the littlest tadpole learned quickly that though she may be an imposing figure to them, she was the protector of their swath of swamp.

Rana knew no other life, at least until a young Skydancer followed in her clawsteps and crashed into her haven. Up until that point, she had never seen another dragon; even as she ushered the frogs into hiding from a potential predator who was much bigger than even her, she couldn’t help the curiosity that arose the moment she realized that the unfamiliar creature looked like her in a way the amphibians simply never had. Though she, too, had hidden away from the threat, when the Skydancer tried to stand and his leg collapsed under him, she revealed herself in order to heal him. She did not become a protector just for the fun of it, after all.

The Skydancer spoke to her as she worked her magic, telling her she could call him Anura, but even though she could understand him, she did not respond, her voice barely able to form proper words after years mimicking ribbits and croaks. Eventually, though, he drew a sound from her when he asked her for her name. She repeated the last word, utterly confused by it; frogs had no need or comprehension of names, and so, of course, neither did Rana. It was then that Anura realized that the fae was on her own in this remote corner of the swamp, and resolved to visit her and teach her about everything she could not learn from the frogs.

His injury healed, and his own family no doubt worried sick about him, Anura had to take his leave. But, as he took to the sky, he called back, "I'll come back to visit you, Rana!" before flying off into the sky.

Rana. He had given her a name. She did not know what it meant or what a name truly entailed, but even so she smiled as she repeated the sound, looking forward to the return of the Skydancer.
