Traveling Dragon

Longhorn Scritcher Horizontal divider showing a slice of the Volcanic Vents coliseum venue at night. Leatherback Sea Turtle

Uh-oh, looks like this curious ridgeback wandered a little too far from her home lair (535433, SparrowSpice), and now she's off to see the world! If ever you feel the need to exalt, she'd really appreciate it if you could just return her to the home lair, or to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, here. This is not necessary, but they would be very grateful!

.+*ABOUT ME*+.

I absolutely adore scientific research! My favorite subject however, is special eye types! What affects do they cause in each element? Each dragon? Why do they occur? And how often? I'm off to research these questions and collect data, and when I've collected all the information about each element I'll shall return home to report to my clan!

PERSONALITY: Asks a LOT of scientific questions. She is very determined, although this has gotten her into trouble a couple of times. She always seems to be bristling with energy.
LIKES: SCIENCE!!! Also sea urchins, especially with butter...
DISLIKES: Non-science-y type dragons, cold water; warm water is fine however
QUOTE: "You can never ask too many questions, unless you do and someone gets mad at you..."

.+*RESEARCH LOG*+.
Data I've collected so far...

SparrowSpice, Kingdom of the Dancing Skies (Home Lair), Ice
I had the absolute pleasure of asking a few dragons about their eye types here in my own clan! Here's what they had to say: Ice Primal- "It doesn't seem to change my ability to see, but my elemental magic is heightened." Ice Swirl- "When I'm stressed my eyesight becomes warped, sometimes blurry... I think they may have a hypnotic affect but I'm unsure." Ice Multigaze- "No fancy powers or anything, but I can see pretty much 360 degrees!" Ice Goat- "I don't really notice anything other than my extended peripheral vision, which is very useful!"

SpiritX, Shadow Flight
I took a look around, and.. I couldn’t find any dragons with strange eye types! What? How is that even possible? I mean, they are supposedly rare.. but there’s 148 dragons here! I’m joking, it took me a really long time, but I found this lad. He’s a wind facet. This was what he had to say: “I have no idea where my pupils are, but I seem to see just fine without them.. But I do have to turn all the time to see since I can’t just move my pupils over, not having any.” How interesting to know about a Wind Facet! Wonder what other experiences Facets from different flights have.

MaybeJester, Emerald Caverns, Wind
After a long trek, I have come upon a nearly hidden clan. Their guards were kind enough. They treated me with respect, and after telling them of my searches, happily let me in. Theres a lot of dragons in this place; and after the last clan I stayed with, asking about eyes seemed to do better than just looking. I was presented with two spiral dragons, each with eyes that swirled just as much as their species! The first, Eon, told me that she has trouble with her sight; having somewhat blurred vision and nothing seemed to stay completely still. Though the other, Edonne, claims no impairment from her eyes. Perhaps Eon just needs glasses...

MoonlilyluvsCas, The Fount of Travelers, Nature
There were a lot of travelers headed towards this green garden glen in the Gladeskeeper's territory. There were many interesting dragons here, but not many were of the scientific mind. Only one really could hold a scientific conversation with Garnet, a food critic named Orchid. She was not a scientist per se, but the two were able to talk about the science and chemistry of food and cooking. It was an invigorating conversation, but not nearly as much as Garnet had hoped. There were also not many interesting eye types here, a few unusual, a few rare, some bright eyes, but nothing spectacular. And so Garnet left, hoping for more scientific minds in her next stop.

taniquetil, Brightleaf Ward, Light
Many of the dragons of Brightleaf were researchers themselves, and Garnet got along with them swimmingly. She made an interesting discovery here: Some of these dragons were not born with special eyes, but developed them later after being exposed to the magical effects of the region. These effects were probably not in place anymore after a magical generator was removed from the nearby ruins, so Garnet was not likely to be affected.

The clan leaders' firstborn son, Balan, was hatched outside this region with common eyes, but they turned primal when he was brought back to the clan territory. How odd! He reported no impairment of sight; in fact, he was in the very peak of health, exercising his body, mind and magic every day. His two siblings had common and unusual eyes.

The clan medic, Osha, had faceted eyes and also reported no impairment. Osha said that there was at least one other dragon out there with special eyes related to this place: Laur, a bureaucrat working at the Beacon of the Radiant Eye. Garnet paid him a visit as well. Laur said that the faceted eyes had not changed his sense of vision at all, which was remarkable. He also thought that the magic of Brightleaf had made him somewhat more optimistic. He couldn't be more specific, though, as the generator that probably caused these effects was still being studied.

Garnet wrote all these things down and got copies of all the academic papers that had been written about the place before leaving, even the strange philosophical one. One never knew what bits of information would come in handy!

Korvus, Varangian Guard, Lightning
I heard about a hatchling with unusual eyes and found the clan, who allowed me to join. They had never had such a hatchling before. Although I had not seen a lightning primal before, it was easy to see the similarities between this young dragon and other elemental primals. After informing the clan of this, they placed the hatchling in my care! I informed them I do not know how to care for a hatchling, but they didn't listen.

Well, I suppose I can learn something new. The young dragon did not have a name, so I decided to call her Fulgurite. I'm not sure if I am taking care of her properly, but studying her eyes and how they change is fascinating. There always seem to be sparks coming from them, but they've grown more intense as she ages. When she was young, lightning would fly when she was hungry, but now, as an adult, it seems to be tied to her excitement level.

While here, I spoke to Fulgurite's parents. I was a bit surprised to see neither of them were lightning dragons, and both had common eyes. The genetics at play do not yet make sense to me, and I suspect that it may be an environmental cause primarily.

RubescentClaret, Misfit Manor, Ice

I've decided to study, more thoroughly, the environmental effects on eye type. My site of research is the Fortress of Ends, as the clans here are exceptionally close to the Icewarden's elemental energies. Or, ahem, the Icewarden's "magic" as the local dragonfolk describe it. My findings are as follows:

Location is the primary determinant of eye element. However, it likely has little bearing on eye type. Reportedly, within the clan I'm residing in, (a clan with over 60 mature breeding dragons) only two individuals with primal eyes have ever been conceived.
Despite the extensive elemental energies, there are no more unique eye types here than in the other clans I've visited.

I've had the opportunity to frequently interview Kaldewyn, an individual with primal eyes of the wind variety. Much like Fulgurite, Kaldewyn's eyes are somehow linked to his emotional state. When he is amused or delighted by my questions, his eyes billow with a vivid aura. It's also possible, when close enough, to feel a breeze coming from them, cool and pleasantly scented.
He's rarely exhibited darker emotional states, but it seems his aura is greatly lessened as his mood lowers.

His flight is excellent, abnormally so. Icy weather conditions do not inhibit him, a skill he attributes to his magically-enhanced antenne. Whether it's in fact a biological or elemental attribute, I cannot distinguish. Wing, torso, and leg musculature is typical of a skydancer. Feather quality and performance is also average. Eyesight, lung capacity, and cognitive capability appear neither enhanced nor impaired.

Exceptionally energetic (even for his species). No strikingly unusual habits, although his level of intuition is disconcerting. Reportedly often requested for nest hatchings, as he can greatly assist in determining the specific needs and interests of hatchlings, even before they've broken out of their shells.
Unusually responsive facial orb, almost hyper-reactive. He often thumbs it when concentrating, presumably as a self-soothing gesture. Agreeable countenance.

Offspring produced are, as expected, unexemplory.

Lirillith, The Sunflower Symphony, Light

I had a stroke of good luck in finding this clan, which migrated here from the Nature Flight! It's quite large, and as you might expect of a group this size, the dragons don't always agree even on small matters, let alone larger ones like a change of flight. As a result, a significant splinter group remained in the Gladekeeper's territory when the clan leadership moved, and many longtime clan members here in Lanternlea Port are of Nature Flight origin. It gives me a chance to survey even more different eye types at once!

Despite the clan's size, I'm told that very few individuals with unusual eyes have been born to nesting pairs belonging to this clan, in either territory they've called home. The clan's midwife eagerly introduced me to her son, whose primal Light eyes can be blinding if viewed directly; they flash and dim in tune with his emotions but are always remarkably bright. Interestingly, his mother is a Water dragon by birth and his father Nature, although not born in this clan. Another dragon, a Tundra, had also been born with primal Light eyes, though I was unable to interview her during my stay.

Also on the Light side of the river, I met one Spiral with Multi-gaze, who was born shortly after the clan's relocation; while his parents and many others in the clan viewed his birth as a good omen and a sign of the Lightweaver's favor, he reports that he has never seemed unusually lucky or unlucky, and has no special abilities beyond an exceptionally wide field of vision.

I then made the journey north to meet the clan's splinter group in Nature territory, with a letter of introduction from the clan's original founder. The druids were aloof at first, but I was offered a meal and introduced to a trio of "tree dragons," who all tended to brown and green colors.

The first bearer of special eyes I met was a spiral named Lelei, whose Multigaze eyes affect her very differently than many others I've met. I noticed immediately that she was unusually sedate for a spiral, and she told me she found her range of vision very disorienting and frequently overwhelming. She's injured herself more than once when she lost track of where her body was in space, and she keeps still as much as possible to prevent this.

The other two dragons I met both had primal Nature eyes. Sparrow seemed at first glance to be a hatchling, but she was simply a diminutive adult, retaining the appearance of a young fledgling by means of a scroll, while Asphodel was a full-grown Gaoler. Sparrow was particularly helpful. She allowed me to observe her eyes closely for quite some time. There is no visible iris or pupil, just a soft green glow, but she reports that her eyes adjust to changing light conditions without trouble. Over time, the vines that characterize primal Nature eyes grew, bloomed, and withered away; the interval varied from roughly thirty seconds to about three minutes, growing more rapid when she was agitated or excited.

The flowers and vines seem to originate from the inner corner of the eye, and grow along both the upper and lower eyelid. Sparrow reported that she feels no pain; there's no sensation of pressure or indication of the plant's roots intruding into the eye socket or surrounding bone and tissue. However, she refused to allow me to investigate to confirm this - I meant to employ a trained surgeon and anesthetic, not just dig around in her eye with my claws! - and no one I spoke to had heard of any such investigations being performed. Asphodel briefly confirmed all of Sparrow's reports about her eyes, though he did add that "sometimes they itch a little."

Both they, and all other Nature dragons who spoke on the subject, maintained that it was absolutely taboo for anyone else to touch or tamper with the vines on another dragon, though Sparrow plucked one flower just as it reached full bloom and gave it to me to examine; it lasted most of the day in my care before withering and dissolving entirely. Primal Nature eyes are very clearly understood to be a gift from the Gladekeeper and to be a conduit of connection to her, though Sparrow and Asphodel both declined to speak about this, even when pressed. Sparrow's father, a druid, explained to me that dragons with primal eyes who share the Gladekeeper's colors are prophets who share a telepathic connection with the Gladekeeper, but no one could locate such a prophet for me to interview.

In the absence of firsthand confirmation, I must tentatively classify some of the Nature dragons' beliefs about primal eyes as superstition - notably, none of the sister clan in the Light Flight reported similar beliefs - but I have a treasure trove of data, all the same. I look forward to moving on to new territory for my next stop!

NecroticroseQT, The Necropolis
My next travels landed me in a place called The Necropolis. This domain is quite large, and a vast amount of dragons live in this region of land deep within the Plaguelands. Right off the bat, I knew this would be the place for me, when I was greeted by the clan's greeter, who referred to herself as The Priestess. She is a dark red and black toned pearlcatcher, who seemed to exude glowing eyes. Immediately I questioned her, asking her about that feature. Such radiance had to come from somewhere, no? But she simply dismissed my questioning, simply exclaiming that the glow radiating from her eyes was something that she was gifted with. She told me there were others in the clan who had the traits she did, and other traits too, so I continued to wander around and see if I could find these people.

I made a list of my findings. The amount of dragons in this domain with glowing eyes like hers was quite immense. A dragon named Pip also had glowing eyes, dark and red, just like The Priestess did. When I questioned her about this, she seemed ecstatic to answer any questions I had. Apparently, she was also a scientist, in the pursuit of greater knowledge about the way the world around her worked. I asked about how her eyes developed the radiance it did, and she pulled me in very closely. She told me that it was a gift. The same thing that the pearlcatcher spoke to me of, but she did give me more details. She explained that, she was not born with this look, but it was something that she was gifted by the clan's leader. Other dragons who lived in this domain might have received their glow in similar ways, but she said she couldn't be certain. After all, her studies didn't dwell in the land of the uniqueness of eye types, but rather in different magics. When I questioned her further on how a young hatchling was considered the clan's leader, she hushed me. She told me it is a highly guarded secret, and that she was not even supposed to let me know this. Interesting... None-the-less, I continued to look around for other dragons who might have interesting things for me to document.

A hatchling named Glowstone also had glowing eyes. An abnormally large spiral named Hurricane also had glowing eyes. Both of them simply said that the glow they had was a gift. Thankfully Pip explained to me the detailing in that, but still it is strange. How does one dragon have the power to gift such radiance in the vision? And do these dragons see differently than any of the rest of us? I tried questioning this, but my questions were dismissed.

There were a few dragons with primal gazes, although I could only speak to three. Mystic with primal arcane eyes. Although, they were also only a child, and they didn't speak super coherently to me. When they did though, I noted that their eyes seemed to move like the sky did, the stars in their eyes twinkling and glowing, and getting more starry with excitement. Bolt with primal lightning eyes. He seemed pretty upbeat and forthcoming. The lightning that jolted from his face seemed to jump and jitter when he spoke, and it too seemed to stem from his emotions. Lastly, Ryoko who also had Nature primal eyes. I did not speak to her for long, thankfully I did not have to, due to the extensive information I received in my previous visit, but she seemed to have similar information that the other nature primal holders gave to me. She was very shy, and seemed to often look away from me, almost.. as if she was ashamed of her gaze?

The Necropolis Domain had a ton of other dragons with unique gazes, which I managed to make small notes of them, but did not speak to, due to their uncooperativeness. Bloodheart with an innocent eye type. I do not know how these eyes even seem to work in terms of different functionality compared to all the other eye types I have researched, but the young coatl did not seem willing to cooperate with me. Mark , a spiral with Goat eyes.. but oddly, seemed to have a malformation, holding three eyes on his face instead of two. All three of them having goat-like eyes. Though, he did not seem willing to speak to me. He didn't even acknowledge me when I called out to him. He seemed distant. A young banescale, Aspen , also seemed to have goat eyes. But she always changed the subject on me whenever I tried to ask her about her vision.

There were many other dragons I noticed; but only made notes of due to the fact I noticed that my consistent pestering started to bother the inhabitance of the clan here. But the last dragon I interviewed was a young dragon named Xene . Another hatchling aberration like Mystic, but this little fella seemed to give me unique insight on the eye type Dark Sclera. He told me that it was given to him through a vial. A mystical potion created by brewers at a trading post , originated from a scientist like myself named Baldwin, which the name I recognized right away. He was the famous scientist who turned himself into the first Bogsneak! I thanked the little hatchling for his information and decided that I would not wear out my welcome in this domain and continue traveling onward. So much tasty information, I feel as if I am bathing in it!
