Effessia came to the clan too young to really remember her parents. They were called upon by the deities shortly after she hatched, and were too busy with preparations to bother too much with her. Her only impression of them, perhaps her earliest memory, was of the impatient brush of feathers against her still bare skin, prickling against the stumps of her own feathers, yet to grow out, and of the cold press of gem-skin against the crown of her head. Not much to go on.

Tarel had been the one to bring her to Ista. Then the clan's only ranger, he had found her half drowned on the mudflats after a storm. She didn't remember that, either.

What she did remember was the soft press of feathers against her side (now with feathers of it's own), and a constant shifting between light and dark and light again; green and gold and blue. And warmth. She remembered the warmth. For five days, she had slept curled around Otta, one of the clan elders. On the sixth day she had woken up, and had even managed to stomach a little food. She remembered the taste of that, too. Crisp and gold.

She had been too tired to really by frightened by this new clan.

A few days later, Salzivar had arrived, swelling with pride and trembling with orange anticipation at the start of adventure. About the same age, it seemed only natural that they should begin to share adventures and bond. She didn't always enjoy it; Sal was green enough, but he was also grey with nerves and red with pride. Sometimes his schemes irritated her, rearing above his head like some great Emperor, snarling and snapping, and she had to spend a few days avoiding him. But mostly they got along.

As she grew, Effessia learned how to be elegant in her movements and her speech. She learned how to make someone blue with pleasure at a compliment, or turn grey with fear, and found she enjoyed the power of it. Words, she realised, had power. It was words, not actions, that turned the world.

She began to study in the archives, pouring over old texts with Farshantir and Tanienok. She begged Tad and Kotissa for certain stories again and again: old, ancient tales of death and life; red and gold and purple. She had never seen words turn purple before. It fascinated her.

Then, one morning, Otta was gone. The Sea called her home, Von said sadly when she asked. So, she too had left. Effessia spent a long time being grey, after that.

But necessity, it is sometimes said, is the mother of invention. In all those stories that she loved, the stories of another world, of an old order long dead, perhaps, or tales brought from distant stars by the deities themselves, Death was just another door. A thin line of iridescence separated one world from the next, and the hero could always cross the line.

And it wasn't as though the deities necessarily called all those who served them into that other world. Surely, it would be much easier to call up those who had gone to serve them? Perseus had done more, and still won. Orpheus had walked back from the land of the dead.

It had to be possible, if she could only find the right spell...

---

As the clan's Necromancer, Effessia is sometimes called on to bring beastclan warriors back from the dead for questioning. Her newfound talent is not approved by everyone in the clan, but she ignores those who cast her sideways looks. Her purpose, after all, is clear.

Whilst she has succeeded in crossing the boundary between life and death (for beastclan rebels and familiars, even if dragons are too big a task as yet), she has come no closer to finding a way to conjure those dragons who serve the deities. Are they truly dead? Or do they live still, cut off by ancient magic from the surface world of Sornieth? Anything is possible.

Recently, she uncovered some ancient magic for contacting The Beyond. She couldn't find what exactly that might be, but after some research decided it didn't seem too dangerous and cast the spell. The portal opened, as expected, but despite her best efforts nothing seemed to happen and, disappointed, she gave up.

Time to go back to the drawing board. Now if only she can stop seeing shapes and shadows out of the corner of her eye...
