It began as the Ancients arose.

A plague of nightmares spread across Sornieth, moving faster than it had any right to. Some were old memories, passed down from ancestors who had lived through the war-torn ages; some were family memories from much sooner, of those who had endured attacks from the other flights; some weren’t memories at all, but deep-seated fears that could too easily become reality.

After three days, it seemed every dragon had the nightmares. After five, some could no longer tell the nightmares apart from their own memories. After seven, for some, the nightmares were more real than any memory.

Weeks passed, and the situation was only getting worse - until a hatchling broke free of his egg and looked into his parents’ eyes, and in moments, they felt the dreams slip from their mind. They remembered truth, now. They remembered what was real.

A second hatchling of such power was born soon after, and she helped her clan the way he helped his. In time, they moved on, each determined to heal all of Sornieth single-handedly if they had to. As they went, they discovered a second ability: they could alter and replace dreams, turning them from howling nightmares to things soft and sweet.

They found one another in the Sunbeam Ruins. Both of them had come to a clan in the Beacon of the Radiant Eye; when they learned they had the same abilities, they started talking more seriously, and in the end, they asked the clan leaders for permission to join, to stay and have hatchlings of their own.

Their guesses were right - their descendants inherited a share of their powers, weakened though they were. It would take time for them to help others with the nightmares, and more effort, but they could do it.

The question now is… will they?

"Why?"

It wasn't a question that was frequently asked. In fact, rarely ever did it cross a Dreamer's mind; they knew why, and knew from a very young age. Yet still the question sprang from Lafey's mouth one chilly spring morning, venomous and cruel.

"Why do we bother helping them?"

He was younger then, but old enough to have had a mate and a home. He was old enough to have spoken of future hatchlings during soft and quiet moments so very like the dreams he brought, and young enough to imagine such things could never be taken from him just days prior. Young enough not to know that some may not take kindly to his abilities, even if it saved their lives.

"Why do we help them when they do nothing for us?"

He lost everything he could have - save his life - deep in the Southern Icefield to a Gaoler clan too secluded to see his non-elemental abilities as anything but a threat. The others may say that their Seekers and Sentries don't represent dragonkind, but Lafey's heart was poisoned against Sornieth still.

After losing his mate, Lafey swore off using his abilities as a Dreamer. He was sickened by the thought of facing another with the nightmare plague, too haunted by what had happened the last time he tried to help. It was what he was raised to do, but he simply no longer believed in it. It wasn't worth it - they weren't worth it.

Though Lafey would say this and much crueler, his Dreamer cousins simply wouldn't allow him to turn his back on everything they stood for. Sure there were enough Dreamers to go around, but what about him? Was this really what he wanted? Was this what his husband would have wanted?

He couldn't stand them. Acting like they knew anything. Acting like they understood.

So, he left, and hopped all around Sornieth - both to escape his family and to put as much distance between himself and the Southern Icefield as he could. Finally, with weary eyes and weak limbs, Lafey stopped at the Viridian Labyrinth. This, he decided, was far enough.

The original plan was to live secluded life in the bountiful wilderness, though that soon proved difficult. The land of the Gladekeeper was lush, but filled with poisonous plants and venomous creatures. After incorrectly cooking a plant landed him in under an herbalist's care for almost a month, Lafey decided to join a Nature clan. As much as he loathed the idea.

After much thought, the former Dreamer joined the Citadel of Kel Asari - a clan big enough so that a dragon who wanted to remain lost could do so. He hid his lineage and abilities from them, and for a short while remained holed-up in his den all day. Unfortunately for him, a clan like Kel Asari keeps a closer eye on its newcomers than he anticipated, and Adra was sent to attempt to get Lafey engaged in the clan. He can't stand her either, but at least she doesn't try to make him forget.

After nearly a week of visits from Adra, Lafey agreed to join the artisan district, and so far has 'tried' with a few various trades. In the end, he simply can't work up the heart for it, and ends up dropping it after a few weeks. Nothing feels right, he would grumble.

Nothing feels the same.

Maybe someday Adra will get through to him, but Lafey would prefer she didn't.
