He's caught up in conflicts he cannot recognize - a glare from someone passing him on a dusty, sun-baked street, a knife embedded in his door - all mistakes!, says Hal. He's right, in a way. No-one would hurt him.
After all, a knife in a door - especially a old, wooden one like Hal's - is the only way to ward away the shadows that hide behind.
