What's so important about a funeral that it needs specially trained dragons? It's not like the dead can do anything.

In my Flight, funerals are private affairs. The clan gathers together and someone flies the ashes of the deceased deep into the sky to release them into the wind. The clan might share stories about the deceased and console one another, but that's about it. It's simple, respectful, and all anyone ever needs.

Earth Flighters, though. I'm not sure what the ordinary dragons do, but these Crystal Court dragons throw a party whenever a clanmate dies. It's an eerie, quiet party with a lots of somber faces, but the entire event is catered, so that's a party to me.

I know this because Dinara invited me to attend the funeral of one of her many vague relatives. I don't remember the name of deceased, but I do remember the distinct unease I felt when I saw the body. The thought of it being so flagrantly displayed before strangers was unsettling.

The funeral was officiated by a masked Obelisk with a low, resonant voice that nearly put me to sleep. She spoke about the deceased and some Earth Flight philosophy about the slowness of stone. I asked Dinara why the Obelisk was the only one to speak. She said that funerals were so special that they were left only to professionals.

A strange thing, to have an entire profession dedicated to the deceased, but at least I got a meal out of it.
