Biography
Shockwave
Chief Engineer
The Company wanted him to join them in their effort to understand the Labyrinth and build a permanent settlement; however, when Shockwave learned that by being accepted into the Flotilla he had the opportunity to sign onto a ship, he latched onto this immediately, determined to leave the planet and its ruins behind.
xxxMost of the damage and wear caused by a few thousand years of hibernation was repaired, though not without considerable effort on the part of the Company to engineer something compatible with his systems. Although they've replaced his ruined leg, he still walks with a limp and carries a cane which he uses whenever the ship is running on more than half a gee of thrust. Offers to take a closer look and find the root cause of his pain, maybe fiddle with some circuits here and there, try to improvise something that works better with the engineering of Merakai's former occupants, have been met with adamant refusal, and he makes no effort to hide the fact that the idea of poking around makes him more uncomfortable than the leg. After all, he says, it's not like the ship is ever accelerating for more than a few hours at a time.
xxxAlthough he didn't have a position of much importance in the society of the labyrinth-builders, his experience with engineering on an industrial scale for an interplanetary civilization made him a prime candidate for the Steelmaiden's chief engineer. Before the ship picked him up, he agreed to provide whatever information he could on the labyrinth-builders to the Company. This information was unfortunately rather sparse, as he'd rarely been able to leave the industrial district and spent most of his days in the factory, but granted the Company some valuable insights into the society that once existed there. It also became clear that his wish to leave the planet stemmed not from grief over the demise of his society, but rather from wanting to distance himself from the life he had lived there and seize the opportunity to freely experience what the universe had to offer. Upon his request, after he was welcomed onto the ship, his worn gray carapace was expertly painted in shiny red and bright circuit patterns in the Steelmaiden's colors. (He's very fastidious about the paintjob and polishing it seems to have become his favored form of fidgeting. Do not scratch the paint. He will get upset.)
xxxIt took him a while to get comfortable with the high position he'd been given and the respect accorded to him by the Flotilla. It also took him a while to get comfortable with the idea of free time. Now, apart from his duties on the ship, he enjoys crafts (especially knitting), soap opera, cooking for the crew, and being the loudest shanty-singer. He's also easily entertained by the most intellectual humor: puns and dad jokes. The crew... tolerates it. Mostly.

The sigils indicate that they will grant swiftness to the bearer... but they don't seem to work for dragons.

xxxShockwave is unique among the Flotilla's many construct crewmembers in that he wasn't built by NC, or any dragon for that matter, but rather was recovered and revived on Merakai by the Company from an extremely well-preserved industrial complex in the Labyrinth. He seems to have been created roughly in the image of the labyrinth-builders, and though they have attempted to revive others, Shockwave was the only one that hadn't deteriorated beyond repair over the millenia. He was found in a closed-off pocket created by a cave-in that must have happened thousands of years ago; his original leg was crushed by debris, but the isolated, dry cavern prevented the degradation of anything vital. xxxIt took a while to overcome the language barrier of species and millenia, but the construct- who elected to call himself Shockwave in draconic rather than retaining his previous name- was a fast learner. |
