I like to keep track of what’s going on at Iris University. The school had it’s problems, yes, but it gave me the credentials I needed for my career, and for that I am thankful. As such, I remember quite clearly when Professor Key was hired. It was long after I had graduated, but I was intrigued. He was a Fire Flighter who somehow climbed the ladder and landed a professorship among an essentially all Arcane staff. It made the news. “Staff Change at I.U.” the headline read. “A Sign of Change or OUTRAGEOUS Outlier?” It appeared to be the latter. There were no other remarkable hirings at Iris University and I chalked Professor Key off as an ambitious but otherwise unremarkable anomaly. Until, of course, his name appeared in the newspaper once again. The initial headline was quite positive. “Alchemy Professor makes GROUNDBREAKING Discoveries, read more on page 6.” It was something about the alchemical properties of lead. Good for him, I thought, and moved on to the next article. Not a month later, I found him in the paper again. “Fire Flight Professor Accused of Plagiarism: Innocent Victim or TOTALLY GUILTY?” The Promenade Post needs to hire better journalists. Anyway, one of Key’s students had accused him taking credit for her alchemy research and the whole affair developed into one of the most interesting scandals I’ve had the pleasure of following. At first, the student was expelled for slander, but she was tenacious. She appealed to the Arcane Ensemble, and after a good two years of lengthy investigations and court proceedings, she proved that she was the mind and the primary author behind Key’s discoveries. He admitted to his plagiarism and he hasn’t made the news since. Key was fired, of course, and under such shameful circumstances. I’m no scientist, but I imagine that stealing research from a young, inexperienced student is not held in high regard. |
