The Arcanist holds a strict set of values; curiosity, knowledge, and research above all else. His children and chosen follow suit with their naturally inquisitive natures and obsession with information, sometimes even at the cost of their safety or lives. Not all dragons see this drive as a boon, given how it can take over one's entire life... So when two dragons, on the run from their homeland due to self-inflicted woes, have one of their eggs hatch just between the border of arcane and ice? Well well well... What else would they do with the squirming loud hatchling, when they must be quiet and still? Leave it behind.

The young Earth-toned coatl couldn't know any better than to ooh and ahh at the world around him, the massive floating rock spires and impossibly twisted landscape an absolute marvel to a child. And all these strange creatures-! He had nobody to ask to know the names of the frogs, the eagles, and the ants. He watched, pondered, made up his own titles and learned from them as much as he could.

He also didn't know what was dangerous, and what was not. Such was the case when he stuck his nose in a new-smelling burrow as he wandered the empty world alone, and encountered he nearest thing he'd seen to be like himself- a snake. An adder, likely also twisted by the arcane lands given the pink striping along its body, and disoriented confusion as it tried to strike him. He shot back with an angry hum- the snake, pausing in its rear at the sound.

Low hums- a curious noise. The coatl stopped, and the snake began to slither away- but began again, and it creeped back out from the hole, seemingly mesmerized. And then another, from the hole, and a third. Even with nothing going for him- somehow, in some way, he had a gift.
- - -
He was a lucky arcane child; nobody was there to explain otherwise, after all! He couldn't merely sooth these snakes, but speak to them. Even request them to do things for him, though they didn't have to. Sadly, they couldn't speak back to their new large and scary friend.

The blessings continued as he grew and watched the floating spires of rock, the strangeness of the land he roamed, and started to make sense of it all- the concept of magic. The snakes nudged him onwards as he chose to pursue and investigate, the mere needs of survival long since accounted for by his natural draconic strengths. He had an affinity for it after all, as all arcane dragons did, and through many years of trial and error could manipulate magic just as well as any wizard or studious dragon, confined by their understanding of language, numbers and order. Vrtra could tap into something much more primal, without those limits, and to the naked eye his level of power seemed to be professional, even fantastical. He used a twisted branch of an arcane tree to better focus the energy without the unpleasant stinging sensation in his claws. Yet again, nobody was there to explain any of this, and he never met another dragon in all his years up to adulthood. He never knew to call himself a dragon. He was a larger, stranger snake.
- - -
Eventually, once he was too far gone to be recivilized, he discovered that there were entire cities of creatures like him when he stumbled over the border into the wind realms, grasses and rodents pleasing to his friendly snakes. Confused and alarmed, he cautiously explored the streets of high-flying civilization with his serpents hissing on his shoulders, and nobody paid him much mind... This meant new things to watch and learn from, new concepts to grasp in his quiet contemplations. Setting himself down in the street, his observations began as he lifted his snakes from his staff onto the ground in front of him telepathically, hummed to them his curiosities..

And to the surrounding drakes, this was a performance.

All he cares for is to learn and watch, yet by nature Vrtra is a spectacle to behold and an oddity to treasure. Perhaps someday, a fellow coatl will think to hum back to him, and understand his perspective?
