Saulė had set off from her home eighteen days after she'd hatched, irritated at being overlooked by her parents (seriously, 46 siblings?) and not bothering to say goodbye to her family- well, except for her hatchmate, Allegra.

"I'm leaving," Saulė had whispered one night, lowering her voice to avoid being heard by the swarms of far-too-similar-looking dragons that were in various stages of comatose around them. Saulė and Allegra had made a den away from their older siblings, but with several new nests hatching quickly after theirs, they were now in the middle- and they were too stubborn to make a new place.

"Take me with you," Allegra whispered back.

But Saulė couldn't. As much as she cared about her sister, the whole point of her leaving was so she could be unique- not part of a matching set.

So she brushed Allegra's wing with her own and twined their tails together, and when morning came, there was one less dragon to take up resources. Or at least that's what they would have said, if anyone had noticed that Saulė was gone.

She set off from the Beacon of the Radiant Eye, traveling across sunny plains until she reached the Hewn City. It was there that she first encountered true shade- perhaps not Shade, but the closest the young dragon had ever come to it. She picked her way carefully through the ruins, constantly looking over her shoulder, the spines on the back of her neck prickling.

After that, it was the Tsunami Flats- acolytes above, how she detested water, but it was better than risking the Tangled Wood- and a fly to the safe, bustling harbor known as the Churnscar Wharf. Turning her back on the looming volcanic cliffs to the south, she flew across the steppes and cliffs of the Windswept Plateau. There, she visited a place called the Sanctuary, full of hundreds of dragons all coexisting and thriving, in colors Saulė had never seen before. It was so peaceful she almost made her home there, but her eye kept catching on fragments of pink crystal in traveling merchants' wares, and a dizzying wind brought wilting star flowers into her path.

Bidding goodbye to the Pearlcatcher knight she'd befriended in the Sanctuary, Saulė took to the sky once more. She flew over the sea rather than risk touching down in the Scarred Wasteland, letting the wind carry her all the way to the Starwood Strand.
