A soft whisper of fabric against sand- an inlay of gold glittering in the seams as the cloth is dredged away from a newfound grave.

She was a scout, a surveyor of distant continents, a courier of secrets and bone-breaking truths - a shadow in the dunes to those who did not know her and a sharp knife between the ribs to those who did. The desert was a murderous thing when the sunlight fell, reduced to its sharp peaks and distant horizons, desolate as if in an endless dream and yet it had welcomed her into all of its curvatures and empty spaces, prodding at her weaknesses until the scar tissue had hardened.

The caravan does not see her but once every moon cycle when she slithers her way into the camp, dry-mouthed and starving, unloading trinkets into the belly of Rhetoric's greed. It is only when the sun begins it's tired descent from the sky does the rest of the crew notice her absence.

Disturbed gravestones and decaying insects shift slightly as the dry winds roll through the empty lands.

The desert is quiet tonight.
