Asmall, green sprout shivered in the unrelenting wind as it battered ruthlessly against the tiny leaves. The miniature flower buds began to bloom slowly, spreading over the stem and elegantly blossoming into a little white-petaled flower that drooped elegantly, camouflaging against the equally pale snow.

Asmall dragonet ran across the snow, melting what was left of it. She spotted something white that didn’t seem to be melting and assumed it was a rabbit. Dropping to all fours and stalking the prey sneakily, she jumped at the last second to land on what was not a rabbit at all, but a slightly crushed bundle of white flowers. Cerise, absolutely horrified, leaped off of it immediately. “I’m so sorry, little flower,” she whispered to the plant and tried to fix the wilting leaves. One of her back legs brushed against something cold and she turned around, gasping slightly at the sight before her.
Dozens upon dozens of pale flowers dotted the melting landscape, pushing through what should’ve been impossible. Flowers did not grow in the cold, and they most definitely did not resist the steep temperatures of the frosty mountains. Fascinated, she carefully picked her way through to the middle, where the fresh, cool scent surrounded her, welcoming and quiet. A refreshing silence settled around her, as most of the native birds around had migrated to the south in search of a warmer climate, but the fragrant blossoms were unrelenting, despite their delicate appearance. Cerise smiled in ecstasy before standing up again and with one last glance backwards, quickly disappeared from the grove.

Fifteen Years Later
“Master, where are you leading us to?” A disciple asked, peering out into the dark unknown. “We don’t normally go here.”
She said nothing at all, silently leading her student deeper into the woods before the rather narrow and unmarked path widened and opened up to a beautiful grove. Dotted with multiple cherry blossom trees in full bloom, their drooping branches swaying in the breeze, pink leaves rustling softly in the shifting wind, contrasted the colorless yet breathtaking rows of white that were everywhere; sprawling across the snowy hill and filling the air with their familiar yet faint scent of mints and freedom. It seemed to beckon to the young pupil until he was thigh-deep in the flowers, surrounded by their entrancing yet distant beauty.
“Breathtaking, isn’t it?” Cerise spoke, almost to herself as the fragrant flowers swayed around her. “A perfect view of the stars as well.” The student looked up, finally noticing the cloudless sky full of miniature, twinkling diamonds that graced the moon and dark sky. They shone bright for such a miniscule matter, glittering even against something so bleak by itself.
“It reminds me of you, Master,” The disciple replied quietly, eyes reflecting the stars back to the sky. “Gleaming against something so lonely and shattered.”
