Crashing. Swirling waters. The small imperial squeezed her eyes tight as the waves pulled her under. This was the end. Such a disastrous fate for a baby dragon, but it would be hers. She felt the breath leaving her lungs as she sank deeper and deeper under the water until her consciousness faded and she fell into an endless sleep. Or so she thought. The imperial sputtered, surprised to be breathing. Was she dead? Had she drowned? She opened her eyes and saw the world in a new way. Colors she’d never seen swirled around her. It was...amazing. The young dragon ran across the beach. At least, she assumed it was a beach. She was still adjusting to her new vision, but she could somehow sense the waves. The beach was rocky, lined with larger boulders that marked the border between shore and coniferous forest. Chilly ocean waves lapped gently at the rocks. The small dragon ran towards them, unafraid of the now tame monster that had nearly killed her the night before. But wait, She thought How am I alive? The young dragon hadn't thought of that yet...perhaps it was shock, or maybe it was just her young mind. As if on cue, a large snapper approached. "Come with me, little dragonet," She said. Her voice scratchy, but soothing nonetheless. The tiny dragonet stared. Her eyes, the snapper's eyes, what... what were they? Letting out a small chuckle, the snapper responded to the dragonet's inquisitive gaze."Oh, my eyes, right?" The young imperial nodded, staring at the newcomer. "Look here," she pointed at a tide pool. The dragonet could see her reflection in it and realized, much to her surprise, that her eyes and the stranger's were the same! She gasped, stone still. Her formerly purple eyes were now swirling waves, as if they held the sea in them. They were beautiful. The snapper patted her. "I was the one who saved you last night. My name is Chantara, and I can control the sea, as you may remember." The dragonet shook her head. "That's all right." Chantara smiled warmly. "Now, tell me, do you have a name?" The dragonet didn't quite remember. Something her mother had said while flying through the storm. "Tethys." replied the dragonet. Chantara chuckled. "Well then, our meeting must have been fate." |
