Like an amber flame at its wick’s end. The candle melting down solemnly and the little flame that sat atop the dying wick was left with no choice but to but to take its last leap of faith or drown in the melted wax sea below. Destria had also felt cornered by decision and doubt. She had got herself stuck between a rock and a hard place, quite literally. The dragon was cornered between a Cliff’s edge and a very very angry guardian of which she could not top strength wise or size wise. Destria had deemed herself the title of best flyer in the valley, sure she wasn’t big or strong but she didn’t need to be when she was quick and witty, taking brain over brawn any day. It felt like the clouds and sky were on her side and the earth and water were against her but she didn’t need their support to be a good dragon. Swimming was not her strong suit, in fact she could’ve sworn she was cursed by Poseidon since the sea brought such bad luck and bad memories. Even something as simple as a puddle could ruin her day after all it was hard flying with wet wings. Shall we get back to the rock and the hard place?

Well, enraged guardian on one side and the other the edge of a cliff, but not the one you can jump off and glide away to safety to, oh no, it’s the Cliff side that blocks and corrals one in, a cold solid mountain wall that she couldn’t climb in time and Destria certainly won’t be turning her back to the mad heaping flame of guardian closing in on her with jagged teeth and a crooked wing, scarred up, and blind in one eye. Who was this guardian? A sore loser that’s who. He met her at the river’s bend where fish were fat and plentiful. This guardian decided to playfully push a challenge onto her “ if you beat me at catching the most fish then I’ll give you 5 shinies but if I win then you give me 10” what kind of deal was that? Gain 5 or lose double? That sounded like a horrible gamble but of course the tricky fox of a coatl dragon was in. But why? She hated water and water hated her so surely she would lose? But like said before Destria was a brain over brawn kind of dragon so of course she had an idea...and some leftover fishing net. Now this guardian was fairly smug and full of himself, after all, how could he NOT win against a little coatl who looked to be 70% feathers and 30% dragon? Destria had gathered up her fishing net and tied one side to rocks before flying above the water and holding the other rockless side before simply dunking the net into the water. Voila! More gosh then even a bogsneak could eat! Did she play fair? Well their was no rules and the guardian was over their fishing for the slippery little scaled critters with his claws. He certainly wasn’t happy when Destria displayed her heap of fish and an outstretched paw for his 5 shinies. Did he ever give up those shinies? Sadly no, a broke dragon always seemed to remain a broke dragon. Now back to the main finale: Rock, hard place, and shiny-less, not an ounce of gold or single jewel in sight. What was Destria to do? Talking wouldn’t get her out of this mess and it’s not like she could pay him off, he was to angry. Destria held her breathe and gathered her flame, chest expanding until her lungs felt like they might explode before she tossed up some dirt from the ground into the guardians face and let the burst of fire forth, a good distraction as she dipped off to the left and made a run for it, leaving the more then displeased guardian in the dust. -MikuKitty |
