Biography

If one has a keen eye, they may be able to glimpse the beautiful Dusky Batfish dragon as it darts across sandy shallows and hides within the coral of Sornieth's oceans. With a sleek, darkly colored body struck by the single continuous bright streak, it's no wonder why this particular dragon shares its name with the Pinnatus Batfish. Beyond appearance and title, these dragons also mimic their piscine brethren's behavior, gliding low and flat against the surface of the seafloor or reef, their wide wings propelling them through the water like sheaths of rippling fabric. Also like the fish, these key traits are geared towards one goal: to make the Dusky Batfish dragons appear as similarly as possible to the Giant Sornieth Flatworm.

This parroting of the Giant Flatworm, which can grow to titanic sizes, is an integral part of the Dusky Batfish's life in two ways. In the first, the Batfish is aided in it's hunting habits, as the Giant Flatworm largely subsists on protozoans, bacteria, and decaying animals, and thus causes no alarm to the crustaceans and fish on which the Batfish dragons feed. Secondly, though perhaps most importantly, the Giant Flatworm's inedibility coupled with it's docile nature allow the Batfish to live relatively safe lives among predators and enemy Maren Beastclans, even when they lack the protection of their own Clans.

Socially the Dusky Batfish prefers to live either a solitary existence or keep to small pairs, as too many of their own kind in one area risks exposing their camouflage. As their abilities excel best in coastal seas, these dragons prefer to make their homes in the water, though some will occasionally venture above the surface. If a Dusky Batfish is spotted out of water, he or she is likely seeking to purvey their talents of hunting fish and spying on Maren to other Dragons. At times, usually as a result of this trade, the Batfish will remain with the Dragon Clan permanently. However, they will still generally be loners, even while in these Clans.
