Often the 'good luck' is the actual result of hard work and perseverance, but that doesn't stop other dragons from seeking them out for advice or a blessing before taking on a difficult or risky task. It is certainly true that perseverance pays off quite often for these koi, and their efforts nearly never go unrewarded. A clan that includes one or more Calico Koi may still undergo hardship, but will nearly always find a way not only to endure but to prosper under adverse conditions. Their very presence reminds and inspires their clanmates that their goals are reachable, even if the path taken to get there isn't expected. Clownfish Darters Clownfish This subspecies is even shyer than their larger cousins, content to live out their entire lives in their anemone homes. The Darters, too, have strong family bonds, and a keen eye can catch them planting and tending to new anemones, growing their family ‘house’ even larger. And if they can grow their anemone gardens to impressive sizes, perhaps even an Imperial Clownfish will move in! This is seen as a great honor. The Tidelord created these Imperials to be leaders, after all, while the Darters are simply caretakers. When dark times befall Sornieth and the Imperial Clownfish leave, the Darters remain behind, ensuring the health and safety of the Tidelord’s many reefs. Everyone needs a home to come back to, after all. Even though Darters love telling stories just as much as the next Imperial, they don’t go out of their way to approach strangers to pass them on. Instead, they rely on the Imperial Clownfish to gather new stories for them to pass around their reef. However, if one listens closely, one can hear the small chatter of these Darters regaling tales to their hatchlings. Moonlight Nix Vengeful Spirits By moonlight, some of these Drowned Spirits appear above the water, skimming above the waves. It is only in the light of the moon that their skeletons appear more vivid, more haunting, with streaks of the ocean hanging between them and giving an impression of their former body. What is most haunting is the voice of this Drowned variant. Carrying over the water for miles, it is like a lullaby that lures dragons towards them. When a dragon gets closer, the sounds are tinged with a coarse edge from time to time. Only when a dragon sees the Drowned Spirit or is within its reach does its voice turn into a chilling screech, signaling it is too late for the victim to escape. Most of those that survive encounters with them were saved by the breaking dawn, as sunlight is their bane. While unclear exactly what gives this variant its malicious intentions, it's thought to be the result of murder by drowning. It appears they seek those from their prior life, especially killers or perhaps a loved one. Whatever the case for their existence, it is best to steer clear of these vengeful spirits. If you hear a song across the waters on a full moon night, retreat from the waves. These dragons should be avoided... if one can even call them dragons. Dusky Batfish Dusky Batfish If one has a keen eye, they may be able to glimpse the beautiful Dusky Batfish dragon as it darts across sandy shallows and hides within the coral of Sornieth's oceans. With a sleek, darkly colored body struck by the single continuous bright streak, it's no wonder why this particular dragon shares its name with the Pinnatus Batfish. Beyond appearance and title, these dragons also mimic their piscine brethren's behavior, gliding low and flat against the surface of the seafloor or reef, their wide wings propelling them through the water like sheaths of rippling fabric. Also like the fish, these key traits are geared towards one goal: to make the Dusky Batfish dragons appear as similarly as possible to the Giant Sornieth Flatworm. This parroting of the Giant Flatworm, which can grow to titanic sizes, is an integral part of the Dusky Batfish's life in two ways. In the first, the Batfish is aided in it's hunting habits, as the Giant Flatworm largely subsists on protozoans, bacteria, and decaying animals, and thus causes no alarm to the crustaceans and fish on which the Batfish dragons feed. Secondly, though perhaps most importantly, the Giant Flatworm's inedibility coupled with it's docile nature allow the Batfish to live relatively safe lives among predators and enemy Maren Beastclans, even when they lack the protection of their own Clans. Socially the Dusky Batfish prefers to live either a solitary existence or keep to small pairs, as too many of their own kind in one area risks exposing their camouflage. As their abilities excel best in coastal seas, these dragons prefer to make their homes in the water, though some will occasionally venture above the surface. If a Dusky Batfish is spotted out of water, he or she is likely seeking to purvey their talents of hunting fish and spying on Maren to other Dragons. At times, usually as a result of this trade, the Batfish will remain with the Dragon Clan permanently. However, they will still generally be loners, even while in these Clans. Esuriei Esuriei Kin to the Astralia are the Esuries, these dragons looked towards the stars and cursed at Tidelord's disappearance. They blamed him for their pain and the stars heard their wishes. A mother, was one of these dragons. She was bitter that Tidelord left her with no guidance. She was her clan’s oracle and when her deity disappeared, her clan doubted her prophecies. They charged into battle against the Beastclan against her advice and fell, slain at the clever traps laid out for them. She fled with her sole surviving child, and wandered the depths of the Sea of a Thousand Currents until she arrived here. She saw the looks of relief from the surrounding dragons and swallowed a star. Her wish came true. She had wished for the emptiness to disappear, as did other Esuries. And disappear it did, the stars they swallowed dug their way down into the depths of their souls. When the fragments had found the emptiness, they tore it free and their hearts along with it. The stars did not live inside the Esuries like those within the Astralia, instead they dissipated into the air as magic and returned to their home in the skies before hibernating for their next life. The Esuries, too, are star-touched. However, instead of hopes, their bodies are inscribed in doubts. These dragons are always hungry, looking for something fill the emptiness inside them. They wander the seas to consume the doubts within other dragons. The more the Esuries starve, the more transparent their skin becomes, revealing the bones within them. If you happen upon a starving Esuries, they may be feral. They will have lost themselves and eat away your doubts, but in their desperation, they may also consume your hopes and magic. Leaving nothing behind, but an empty husk left to wither. Unlike the Astralia, the Esuries are not connected to the Aether because they did not gain a star companion. Instead, their minds are often consumed by thoughts of other dragons. The heavier the weight of doubt in a dragon’s mind, the louder it resonates into an Esuriei’s mind. Many Esuries find themselves eating, not just to satiate their gnawing hunger, but to find a moment’s peace. Leviathan Leviathan The ocean is a vast. But many don’t venture far below the surface. Down deep below, there are creatures. Guardians of the deep. Creatures that have caused massive ship wrecks and created stories that would make a sailor weary. The Leviathans. They’re serpentine bodies, a dark hue that renders them practically invisible in the abyss. The only warning unsuspecting victims get are the bioluminescent spots along their wings but even that isn’t enough. Their speed and power make them extremely dangerous. They almost never leave the ocean, only occasionally traveling through deep rivers. It is also suspected that some Leviathans may even be certain lake monsters. Many water clans form alliances with Leviathans to insure defense as well as safe passage through the waters. Other flight dragons who know of the Leviathans would give offerings and work to please the Leviathans for the safety to cross the waters like the water clan’s; usually for peaceful visits within the water domain. Dolphin Dancers Dolphin Dancers Dolphin Dancers are nomadic entertainers, who travel from clan to clan with a pod of around 2-7 members. These 2-7 members can be family, friends, or lovers; but tend to not be with strangers. New members can be invited if they are close enough with the whole pod. Within the pod, everyone is treated with equal respect, no matter what species or gender they are. When the pod arrives in a new clan, they will start performing in the largest body of water within the clan's boundaries. They then begin to hum and dance with their own unique staging, which each pod has developed as a form of identity. All members dress similarly, normally with gorgeous silks, sylvan attire, and anything that makes them look gorgeously flamboyant. Dolphin Dancers may have Warmwater Wanderers if they add to their performance. Even though the pods enjoy a sense of identity, they don't mind running into other pods of Dolphin Dancers. They tend to get along due to their similar beliefs, and may even do a show together if they feel it necessary. Many Dancers like to remember other pods, in case they want to split from their current one. Splitting from a pod tends to be emotional, and the one leaving will get a beautiful, heartfelt dance from the other members. However, it is not frowned upon to leave a pod. It is celebrated as a sign of moving on and making the effort to find a new home. Rejoining a pod you were in before is also not frowned upon, and the one rejoining will get a wonderful welcoming dance upon their arrival. Orca Killer Whales Dragons with Orca traits are intensely social and fierce. Often counted among the best of their clan’s fighters, these dragons prefer to hunt with groups of their peers. One almost never sees an Orca as a solo trainer in the Mire, for example; they find isolation from others—even when in charge of young dragons—too isolating, and are much more content when hunting as a pack. In such groups, the eldest (or fiercest) female often takes charge, and Orcas consider the strongest hunting packs to be those with a trio of mother and daughters at their core. Gregarious and predisposed to strong pair bonds, Orca dragons enjoy physical affection, and often express their appreciation with a gentle nip or raking of teeth. Hatchlings are among the most playful in their clans, not only tussling with each other in wriggling tangles, but endlessly curious and demanding of stimulation. Young Orcas may be predisposed to wander, striking off for the most solitary adventure of their lives until they find a new clan. Among them were dragons who focused their magics so strongly upon the stars - their movements in the sky, their reflections upon the water, the lazy flight of fireflies around their noses, images of constellations accidentally burned into their morning toast - that the effects seeped into their physical bodies, creating starry patterns upon their hides. This, too, became a new and exciting source for prophecy - and when it was discovered that the stars were passed down to one's children, birth rates skyrocketed. The first of the Starlit Fathomsearchers developed hides of the clearest, darkest nights, but as the oracles' skills in star-scrying grew and their collective understanding of the study expanded, so too did their coloration, eventually spanning most shades the sky itself might take on. Those blessed with the filigree upon their faces are believed to be marked for leadership among the sect; those who develop cryptic runes along their sides consider their (still extremely cryptic) meanings as guidance on their search. It is not, however, uncommon for one's birthstars to be obscured by a cloudy pattern - also a source of deep study and debate, for when seeking a missing god, the hidden stars become (very arguably) more important than those that shine more plainly. Blue-shaded Starlit Fathomsearchers bearing none of these prestigious birthsigns, however, must be cautious in attempting study of glowing bugs in public spaces, lest they be mistaken for Astralia wish-granters. There is little more distracting to one's starscry than the excitable pestering of hatchlings with boundless desires, nonexistent boundaries, and occasionally a ruthless determination to conflate the skills of the two subspecies by making wishes to bring back the Tidelord. Repeatedly.

Calico Koi
Calico Koi

Calico Koi are representatives of good luck and perseverance in their clan's lair.

Clownfish Darters
Clownfish
This subspecies is even shyer than their larger cousins, content to live out their entire lives in their anemone homes.

Moonlight Nix
Vengeful Spirits
By moonlight, some of these Drowned Spirits appear above the water, skimming above the waves.

Dusky Batfish
Dusky Batfish
If one has a keen eye, they may be able to glimpse the beautiful Dusky Batfish dragon as it darts across sandy shallows and hides within the coral of Sornieth's oceans.

Esuriei
Esuriei
Kin to the Astralia are the Esuries, these dragons looked towards the stars and cursed at Tidelord's disappearance.

Leviathan
Leviathan
The ocean is a vast.

Dolphin Dancers
Dolphin Dancers
Dolphin Dancers are nomadic entertainers, who travel from clan to clan with a pod of around 2-7 members.

Dragons with Orca traits are intensely social and fierce. Often counted among the best of their clan’s fighters, these dragons prefer to hunt with groups of their peers. Starlit Fathomsearchers
Fathomsearchers
In the Tidelord's long absence, many oracles began to turn their divination skills upon non-traditional sources, desperately seeking knowledge of his whereabouts.

Repeatedly.
