Ersatz was once a delegate for the 'Fighting for Lightning' cause, a society set up during the fallout of the Bounty of the Elements to protest the innocence of the Stormcatcher and his subjects over their alleged involvement, and to try and stop misconceptions and rumours about Lightning-borns from spreading.

Seemingly passionate and dedicated, Ersatz would speak on behalf of the Lightning flight, rallying support and doing his best to educate and unite. Decked out from crest to claw in the obvious garb of a dragon from the charged deserts, his commitment to the cause was admirable, and he became a well-known face in the Shifting Expanse. But that face was not his own. Under the typical circuit runes and steampunk attire was a stringy little sneak, a liar from another flight entirely who was obsessed with the attention and benefits he got from being part of the movement, but without ever properly understanding it or caring about the dragons he was supposed to be representing.

Ersatz kept up his false identity for as long as he could, until the notoriety he had greedily sought eventually backfired on him. The sly fae found himself under scrutiny, as is the way when the spotlight has been focused for too long and starts to illuminate the flaws. The press began to speculate that the fae's bright eyes were a little off for a Lightning dragon, and the fact he was never seen without his gear was criticized too, as were his circuit markings, which his doubters claimed were painted on. More rumors circulated about the hazy details of his birthplace and the lack of family history until the news broke one day that Ersatz's former clanmates had come forward to say that he was in fact Water born, and masquerading as one of the Stormcatcher's denizens.

Shocked and appalled by this scandalous revelation, Ersatz was immediately dropped by Fighting For Lightning and its affiliates. He was hounded out of the Shifting Expanse and ended up in the Tsunami Flats, his true birthplace, where he could hide in rockpools and slip into weedy caves without being noticed. The snivelling fae believed that he was the real victim, cursing the harsh treatment when he was called out for his deception and for using the adversity of others to boost his own ego. Ersatz, completely oblivious to the feelings of other dragons, couldn't comprehend that because he had falsely spoken for the charity, his actions had damaged their reputation and made it look foolish for electing a con artist to represent them.

Ersatz continues to brood in his dank coastal hovel, wallowing in self pity while others shake their heads in anger and disappointment. The stories and goals of Fighting for Lightning and its supporters were not the fae's to tell, but he could have been an valuable ally, and helped to create a platform for others to take a stand on. That would never have given the narcissistic dragon the spotlight he so desperately craved though, and already he is plotting his next identity reinvention..
