Biography
Adam
Legend of the Temple of the Torn
Legend of the Temple of the Torn
‘I said get back inside,’ you hear your mother whisper–but you want to see. You want to see so badly that you swear it’s killing you, but your mother’s claw has grown so insistent that it’s become hard to struggle against it.
She’s told you stories of them, after all–every night, sometimes after minutes of begging. You have to see him! The villain of the story, the bad guy, the one who fights the valiant hero…you just have to! A real, live Adam. What you do not realize, is that he may very well be fighting someone other than the hero: your very own mother. She arches her back in an attempt to look larger, teeth bared in clear warning. From behind a large rock, your stumpy tail thumps on the ground. He’s coming closer. Will he speak in a loud voice, like the stories? Laughing, overblown, puffing his chest in far-overdone confidence? Will he give some long speech, before the hero strikes him down? He does not. The ground quakes with his footsteps, his massive bulk barreling towards your snarling mother. Your interest turns to dread, your smile gone in an instant. This wasn’t supposed to happen. Where was the hero? Your four little eyes gleam tearfully when his meet them: and he stops just short of the fury that is your mother’s claws. She swats, for good measure: just to be sure. Nervously, she flares her wings, her gaze clearly flicking between the two of you. The snake at his neck speaks, and a gasp leaves your throat aching. To this day, you still don’t understand what it meant when it spoke, and your mother bites her tongue when you ask. And suddenly, he has turned back, as if nothing happened. Your mother trembles in confusion, but she stands firm until he disappears from sight. She collapses into a half-sitting position as soon as he is gone, and you rush to meet her. She curls around you, clinging more desperately than she ever had before, saying something about moving dens again. And though you hate the thought of moving again, you nod numbly. You will not ask for the story tonight. Perhaps not the next, either. You’ve met the villain, and he is worse than the stories. But the hero is so much better. You gaze into her eyes, and flick the tip of your tongue against her great snout. That is for certain. |
