Biography
Sobe
A hub of free trade and travel, particularly one with a loosely defined administration and conflicting leadership, obviously requires a dedicated space for diplomacy. Thus Sobe provided one. The tea house sits precisely between the two halves of the lair, on top of the verdant rock spire and underneath the moored kite tower, surrounded by unfettered breezes and meditative gardens. Pathways ascending and descending from each section of the lair to the edge of the gardens provide an opportunity for calming reflection and focus before reaching the spot where neutral meetings will be joined. That Rufus and Raffles maintain smooth running of the lair since the tea house's establishment proves its use and brilliant success. (That they did so before, and continue to, by never interacting with each other is not relevant.) That Sobe expected. She did not expect primary negotiations to involve a not-quite-war between the dragons and rampant mice of the lair. How is this supposed to work, it can't mice won't negotiate they're want-take-all, and negotiation without compromise isn't diplomacy it's politely framed tyranny. The mediation is a work in progress. The faes of the lair are on permanent recruitment to ferry all mice to the tea house, where Sobe provides them quarters segregated by sex (even though mice are apparently hermaphrodites). Fortunately their population remains fairly steady anyway as the majority of visitors coo and pocket one to take home or compliment the appetizers and pop one to indulge. (Why do the majority of the guests come—regularly, frequently!—only to socialize, or meet someone, or play with the mice, or enjoy an informal light meal, or even read?) (Although the constant business does mean a very nice turn of profit, which allows for higher quality tea and effects, but that's not the point!) (Also, why does the chef keep sending themed animal pastries to sell instead of a simple, consistent menu?) The tea house's name is The Tranquility and Mediation Ceremonial Garden. Not The Mouse House. Despite how everyone refers to it. The cats of the lair are deeply, deeply interested in joining the ongoing negotiations. Sobe was not prepared for the tea house to become an embassy. She's not supposed to be declaring diplomatic borders and political sanctuary, and how does she enforce it when the offenders are as intractable as the refugees? |
